Because when smart people get stuck in mindless jobs, they get disgruntled really quickly. Society is not equipped to handle an army of frustrated smart people. You know what? I forgot that America’s Republicans are way far right to the UK’s tories. So it’s possible the tories weren’t being as devious as Republicans would be. I forget that I can’t compare American political parties to European ones. The Democrats are probably the Tories.
If I had to guess, and I know nothing about UK politics but I think Labour is the equivalent of Democrats and Tories the equivalent of Republicans, but if I had to guess, those projects probably consisted of a bunch of government funding towards privately owned projects that would then produce energy to sell on the open market and not benefit the UK at all.
