Airsoft players wear vests similar to (or better than) what the military uses. The main thing is he doesn't wear actual plates in them because plates are heavy and uncomfortable and he lacks the physical and mental fortitude to wear plates for hours on end.
The carriers I wore in the Army weren't stiff like that when they didn't have plates in. It's the thickness that I'm looking at. He may have bought some thin Temu plates or something. They don't "flop" like original comment said. He's also got it on way too loose, by virtue of being able to yank it off of him. This is still cosplay.
I'd love some metrics on how many of these plate carriers have ever sported a plate. I'd be willing to bet it is a very low percentage. That thing would have hurt like hell coming off of him like that if it had ceramic plates in it.
Pretty much none of them. It doesn't help that regular plates on your average meal team 6 larper would cover about half their sternum, max. When plate carriers are being advertised with cummerbund extenders sized for a size 48 waist you know they're being worn for purely performative reasons.
