Trump's first term was awful in so many ways. When Biden won, I thought OK—we'll get to put this ugly chapter behind us. But Republicans resurrected Trump (we can thank Kevin McCarthy for that). I thought OK, but Jan 6th. Top classified documents theft. Election coercion on video. Convicted felon for fraud. He HAS to be finished.
When he won, I felt like 9/11 happened all over again. I couldn't believe it. I knew he'd be worse. The wounded monster with his grift & grievances.

Very good to remember how long and closely we have worked with Canada, and how incredibly screwed up it is to have a president who is mentally and emotionally incapable of maintaining a close working relationship. Everything he touches becomes a battle, and he is always trying to one-up and make personal gains. Disgusting, perverse, and utterly destructive of all positive things that they US could be doing.

Trump isn't the only issue. Even if he were to dissappear tomorrow, there has been big fundamental changes since he's taken power that it would take many years of continuous movement in the right direction to make the US somewhat trustworthy. The Canadian government thankfully has been slowly divesting economically to other countries for the future. It's just too bad that Trump went against the once named NAFTA agreement with this tariff trash to pressure; as opposed to proper renegotiation.

On behalf of everyone who voted against Trump and begged others to do the same, I'm so sorry we failed. Seeing Trump get voted back into office was the worst day of my life, both for the sheer horror, fear, and dread I felt, the sense of betrayal from my fellow citizens, and the realization that we are not the bastion of freedom and democracy I was brainwashed into believing. I only hope that one day we can mend the fences he broke.

Unfortunately, your allies can no longer trust that "back to being a reasonable nation" is a lasting condition. We can hope for four good years, AND WE DO hope for that, but now we know no agreement, no treaty, no promise can be guaranteed to last any longer than that, the next guy isn't bound by it. I wish I had a solution to propose, but I don't. Our solution is that we are turning to Europe for the partnership we've lost.

Seventy seven million Americans voted for Trump in 2024 when he received roughly 50% of the votes, he has been elected president twice and republicans hold control of both the house and senate.
Trump is not an aberration, he represents the will of half of US voters. That is what the USA is as a nation.
We Canadians know that there won't be some miraculous change in American political dynamics. This is who they are as a country.

This is why we need a Congress that actually moves and makes strong legislation and enforces the law and doesn’t let a president walk all over them. We need to vote out every Republican AND incumbent Democrat (voting in primaries is most important here) to get people who actually want to work for us and not Israel or their pockets. Yah we need amendments and strict laws against things like felons running (though that can be done at the state level) and to eliminate the DOJ “policy” not to prosecute a sitting president, and for the Democrat party to stop ignoring voters and putting in super unfavorable candidates so that the voting population gets split. They need to find an unlikely person who will unite that entire party because it’s a hot mess in general. It’s not an impossible fix it’s just improbable thanks to IS.
