I've gotten used to it at work where we have to use a paging system, but yeah at first definitely this

see yourself on the self checkout monitor

Voice, I've had mixed feelings but I've heard myself sometimes and been like "yeah that's actually pretty good." Take a picture or vid of me, I'm gonna take your phone and shove it down the garbage disposal before *that* sees light of day

Hey, that's my reaction to hearing a recording of your voice as well.

Videos are just the worst. I'm already in the foetal position from seeing my terrible posture and ugly mug, then the audio just takes a run-up for a kick in the nuts. Thank Og we can't encode smell.

But yeah, I work as a video tech. (Corporate streaming, multicam, event AV, etc)

Yes!!!

It's mandatory for voice training. Trans people everywhere inflict this onto ourselves deliberately.

Hearing my voice in a recording for the first time was a rather large blow to my image, and I didn't have much confidence in myself in the first place.

Doooooooood!!! ........... THIS

Expecting high-society elegance from your recorded voice and getting street-punk grit instead.

1 week ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'd kill for street punk grit. I get awkward mouth breather.

1 week ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I get engineer with poor social skills.

Truth. I can’t believe how nasally I sound compared to what I hear. Then again, I have hearing loss.

Bone Conduction: When you talk, your skull bones vibrate. These vibrations travel straight to your inner ear. This adds low, deep tones to your voice.Air Conduction: When you listen to a recording, the sound only travels through the air into your outer ear. It skips the skull vibrations completely. The Missing Bass: Without the vibrations in your head, your recorded voice sounds thinner, higher, and more nasally than you expect.

It should sound the same. Why does it not sound the same. Who is playing my own voice in my head when I talk.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I don't like that.

1 week ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Same. But people tell me I have a nice voice. And that's why I have trust issues.

Somebody told me I did a really good job at karaoke a while back. Knowing how I actually sound combined with the fact that my mom is totally tone deaf, I just can't trust their words..

Same here. I *hate* hearing my own voice from a recording. But people tell me I have a nice voice and should be a radio announcer or a voice actor. I never see openings for those positions on job websites though.

And that's why I avoid video recordings, uinless I'm shooting the video. Fair to muddling, not great, behind the camera, but fucking dreadful in front of it.

I hate a lot about myself but but oddly I dont hate my voice. I hate my speaking, but not how I sound.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've heard this is generally bad for most people, but can be especially bad for trans people if recordings of their voice sound to them like someone of the wrong gender

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's the lack of bass that we perceive from our vocal chords vibrating. It doesn't carry over to recordings.

You should try editing a monthly podcast... where you're the host!

I've been told I have this deep pleasant voice. But when I hear my voice it sounds squeaky.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My sister and I have the same voice. It gets surreal.

Actors typically hate watching themselves in movies.

Two notable exceptions are Samuel L. Jackson and Kurt Russell. Both said something close to "I love watching me kick ass!"

They do!

Nothing ruins my day faster than hearing what I actually sound like

I had a Canadian friend once tell me I sounded exactly like Reba McEntire. I grew up like an hour from her hometown, so I guess it's not unexpected that I would, but like...that shit still hurt.

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There are so many worse folks you could sound like, Reba's actually pretty chill.

And then I look on the mirror and the day gets worse.

And my feet really stink magnesium don't help or zinc or whatever and inserts go into my shoes to die. I could spend a fortune on shoes.

Same lol

I sound like this on video playbacks, I fuckin hate it.

1 week ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

That made me laugh so hard.

It's so funny because there's such a deeper truth hidden in this scene. She's being completely inconsiderate of others feelings. He calls her out for it. She retorts with something unrelated to her being inconsiderate. Someone else enters the discussion and completely ignores the original point and joins the debate to focus on the irrelevant thing. The original person who's distraught has to scream that none of that matters, what matters is the original lack of empathy. It's every debate.

This you?

Read aloud , this will help. You’ll get more comfortable with the sound of your voice it will take on more character and confidence.

The voice I hear when I'm talking has a smooth, deep timbre. The voice that's played back to me is nearly an octave higher and surprisingly nasally. It's bullshit

1 week ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Your voice is rattling your skull and you can hear it. The people you're talking to cannot, including yourself via recording

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's a CBC podcast I really enjoy, but the host sounds uncannily like me, like how I hear my own voice in a recording, right down to the accent. It's weird.

1 week ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Luckily not many people sound like me. I did talk to one person over the phone on a tech support call who sounded like me tho and it was very disturbing.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Similarly, I don't think anybody enjoys the "you know who you look like? X actor!"
My brain doesn't like that. Oh it didn't like it at all
