No they don't need to be fully digital for that. They can just offer those services to digital sales. But they won't because this isn't about customer service or convenience. Its about increasing Sony's bottom line. Its cheaper not to produce discs *and* they get a bigger cut from digital sales through their own storefront. Less discounts too. This is bad for everybody who's not a Sony shareholder.
Just because you don't care doesn't mean its without value or makes the anger of those who do care less valid.
1) it gives Sony total price control. Discs are now, often, actually cheaper because the PS store discountrs are less frequent and less deep. 2) It'll increase Sony's bottom line with 0 benefit to consumers (less manufacturing costs and Sony gets a bigger cut of digital sales than it does physical). 3) It kills the second hand market. Sony is know to just erase " bought" stuff from your library. 4) Anything that takes away consumer choice without benefit is anti consumer.
