no part of movie making is really necessary but doing things like filming in 70mm add a level of depth and care that significantly improve the final product and lifespan of the work, regardless of if the audience is explicitly aware of it.
some exercises i do: make a big sloppy scribble then try to push it around to make something interesting. start a sketch but keep adding to it until it breaks or looks bad. try to make a bad drawing then try to recover from it. and the best: buy more mark making materials.
aluminum foil works great, costs nothing, endlessly reusable, and doesn't leave marks.
