#36 this is what cybersecurity is like.

Imagine if you, as a human, simply read the words “stop breathing” and it actually caused you to stop breathing. Now, imagine you’re responsible for a child who has that vulnerability.

“Go to therapy!” Therapists are coaches, not magicians. And I feel like that guy’s therapist (probably court-ordered) should wear a freaking bomb squad suit. Truth is, he probably won’t see one until he hits rock bottom, and who knows how many people he will hit on the way down. Also, therapy might make him worse. People with that lack of self awareness often learn how to use therapy words and go on in the same destructive patterns.

Being scared is a valid reaction; that level of resentment is extremely dangerous. Cringing is also a valid reaction - it is extremely cringeworthy. Reading that whole thing just made me *tired*. Like, do you have any idea how much WORK it takes to de-radicalize somebody in that mindset? It’s not my job to de-radicalize that particular person, thank the Maker. That is just…not the statement of a person who has the skills and healthy social support necessary to actually get better.

Oh no! Never let your gods out of the house! Free range / outdoor gods devastate populations of birds, small mammals, and reptiles. Outdoor gods are also more likely to be hit by cars or injured getting into fights with other gods.

This is driving me crazy. Is there a word for “pickle” that rhymes with “there”?

#9 yeah, this show jumped the shark several seasons ago. What’s next, the octogenarian President having an affair with his diaper nurse, who is a dead ringer for his daughter?

My wife’s mother was diagnosed with FTD about a year ago; it is such a brutal and insidious disease. Initially it didn’t even look like a disease, it just seemed like she was really, really fucking mean. Memory, language skills, cognitive abilities all intact, but lashing out at family members, bullying caretakers, doctors - actively harming everyone who was trying to help her. I really hope this generation can make progress understanding and treating conditions like FTD.

I’ve been to India and the food was one of the high points. Yeah, some street vendors are bad news. And absolutely don’t drink the tap water. The main thing we had is local people we trusted and they steered us right.

Curry for breakfast was a bit much for some western appetites, but that was a preference thing not a health thing.

In my experience, “No weirdos” is basically impossible to enforce on FB marketplace, even if all you’re selling is a couch

Entomology is insane. If you’re not a professional biologist and you’re trying to ID an insect you did really, really well if you got the correct genus. Professionals often need a microscope to get the precise species. Family apidae (honeybees and bumblebees - not including wasps) has over 5700 species. For reference, there’s about 6200 species of mammals - bears, rats, cats, bats, whales, and people. Don’t even get me started on beetles.

“Depression mantras” is a perfect phrase for a perfectly horrible phenomenon. Having depression is like being a monk for the WORST guru

Not actually contradictory. Writing out the same words seven times, longhand, feels agonizingly slow in the moment. But the result - memorizing multiple pages of material in one day- is fast.

I started with step 3 and then forgot what the other steps were. Where’s my cat again?

Are we not acknowledging that the cat is named “hemmorhoid”? Very authentic name for a barn cat.

Also: if a bunch of women wanted to open women-only gyms so they can work out without unwanted attention from men, I say “good for her!” I’m not saying that’s the same - it’s not. But maybe if some men perceive hot women simply existing as an assault and they decide to not go to mixed gender gyms then that’s a good thing.

#22 I’ve been to like…6 different gyms and nobody has ever shoved their nakedness in my face - no matter how nicely I asked! Maybe I’m just going to the wrong ones?

But also: homophobia is a weapon of the enemy. We do not need it. We will not use it. Don’t make me tap the sign.

New plan: raise the requested revenue, by passing “the Pete Hegseth City on a Hill Make America Great Again Eternal Freedom Fund”. The content of the bill will be a tax on wealth above $20 million and eliminating common loopholes for capital gains tax. See what happens to him after that.

The most striking thing to me about trees is the amount of dead matter they drop and scatter. Twigs, outer bark, old leaves. Most of the wood in the trunk is dead. The life is in the roots and the soil, the leaves and the air and the sunshine. Paper-thin interfaces between earth and sky, connected by a thin network of conduits - xylem and phloem. By casting off so much dead matter, trees fuel entire ecosystems of decomposers, fungi, mosses, invertebrates….
