Just reread that bit and it's a bit ambiguous. He did have directions on delivering the final package/message but nothing to say what they were. Looks both ways to cross, hit by a juggernaut (UK slang for HGV but haven't heard it used for years) and killed. Although leaving the note for his wife does have it look more purposeful.
