As someone from SC with plenty of family still there: Who he was after was the real him. After Sinners I went on a Jack O'Connell binge. I highly recommend Starred Up and Little Fish, both O'Connell starred in. Starred Up is a prison drama about a violent teen repeat offender sent to adult prison forced to confront his anger and his own father in the same prison in an effort to rehabilitate. Little Fish is about a young couple navigating an epidemic sweeping the world (filmed a year or two before COVID) that slowly causes permanent memory loss while trying to hold onto each other.
Except there's been A LOT of noise. If he didn't have everything else and it was just the sexual assault accusation and if that turned out to be false, then he could maybe recover and still win. Or if it was the rest without this, he could maybe recover. BUT with everything combined, even if it does turn out to be false beyond a doubt, I think he's done. But that's only because he's running as a dem. If he was running as a repug he'd probably be even more likely to win.
I'm convinced it's a need to feel superior. They think assimilation and being fully accepted by the oppressor makes them better than others of their group since they're "smarter" and more "clever". It's also why rich people despise poor people even if they grew up poor too. Idk Poppys story but sometimes when wild animals get domesticated they can't connect with other animals of their own species because they come to recognize humans as their own and their own species as different from them. That might be the case here.
