I really don’t get this rage bait Luddite mentality. For books with a trillion hard copies in circulation, I don’t see the issue. Many of these books would have been disposed of anyway, so might as well put them for good use by digitising. Obviously it’s a problem for rare items.
Zoomers can shit on that era as much as they want, but they will never know how good we had it.

The problem is more to do with the way epoch is represented, rather than underlying cpu architecture. One can still compute 64 bit numbers on 32 bit machines, but convenience wins over foresight, so programmers just used native integer types for the epoch.
