Maybe. If Christian Slater's British accent in that movie was anything to go by, Costner's must have been abominable. Holland's natural British accent and referring to Penelope as "mum" might have felt like more natural line delivery, or they could have cast a *slightly* smaller-name American actor for the part who wouldn't need to assume a false accent; the cast *still* would be ridiculously stacked. Bear in mind, all of these criticisms are coming from a place where I enjoyed the movie.
Listen, I know you're fixated on this point, but I don't care about historical accuracy in a story about a man being tormented by the Gods and encountering a series of monsters and supernatural events. I'm not asking for historical accuracy, I'm not saying it was bad for everyone to be speaking with an American accent, all I'm saying is that Holland's American accent sounded a little artificial because it was.
Eh, mostly it bugged me because of his American accent. I get it, both of his characters' parents are portrayed by American actors so it wouldn't make sense for Holland to speak with his natural British accent. It just felt out-of-place to me in the same way that Beneful Cummerbund did as Doctor Strange. Everything else about Holland's performance was excellent.
Seems like a lot of these guys "who would never commit suicide" when times are good might have a different opinion when they see consequences coming that will irrevocably change their lives for the worse.
To be fair, Tom Holland referring to Odysseus and Penelope as "dad" and "mom" was a little jarring, but I absolutely loved the rest of his performance.
"Historically accurate"...the fictional story about a guy being tormented by monsters and gods...should be "historically accurate?" I need someone involved in academics to show me a historically accurate Lotus-Eater or Laestrigonian so I know what that looks like in order to prepare for a historically-accurate telling of the Odyssey.

Spoiler for the movie, but I'm just disappointed that Nolan cut out all the dialogue between Odysseus and Polyphemus and thought, "Nobody will notice that's gone."
Having seen the movie, Anne Hathaway and Lupita Nyong'o were top tier casting. Elliot Page as Sinon felt a little out of place in the Odyssey instead of the Aenead, and Tom Holland was okay, though his American accent and referring to Odysseus and Penelope as "dad" and "mom" was a little distracting. Matt Damon and Charlize Theron were the worst casting choices, IMO, though I tend to blame that more on the script and Nolan's apparent discomfort with more supernatural elements of the story.
Spoiler: Christopher Nolan took out all of the dialogue between Odysseus and Polyphemus and thought, "Nobody will miss that."
If it's a "prediction marketplace" and not "gambling," then all he was doing was leveraging an excellent position in the market.
Remember, seven years of that trip was spent on Calypso's island, hanging out there with a literal goddess who was madly in love with him and promising to give him eternal youth if he stuck around. Not saying whether that's a good or bad thing, but no wonder it took Odysseus so long to get home lmao
