Fun Fact : The legend of the Cyclops is alleged to have originated when ancient Greeks discovered the fossilized skulls of prehistoric dwarf elephants on islands like Sicily and Crete. These skulls featured a large central nasal cavity which early people mistook for a massive, single eye socket . When the Odyssey was written in the 8th century BC Elephants would not be encountered by Greeks until Alexander the Great's 326 BC Indian campaign.

To be fair, even if they knew about elephants, they could still see a skull, knowing where it's from and think it kinda looks like one eyed giant, and then just let their imagination goes from there.

The greeks had encountered elephants before that but not dead and skinned ones.
If you saw a elephant skull without the knowledge before hand that it was a elephant, would you assume it was a elephant? with that giant "eye socket" in the front of its skull? Elephants don't have that when you see them alive.

another fun fact. Odyseus was often called Odys for short, and Odys means nobody, or no one. So when the cyclops asked his name he didnt say no-man, he actually gave his shortened name. the pun doesnt translate
