In Missouri, there is (was; currently shut down) a former underground lead mine that was outfitted for diving. It’s a pretty awesome spot.

Makes sense. I’m a diver, not a climber, but I feel like it’s a similar approach. They teach personal and buddy checks in basic open water, and I’ve stopped strangers from rolling out of the dingy with their mask still on their head and their air not turned on. I run through my mental checklist before stepping or rolling into the water every… single… time. I imagine climbing has a lot of those checks.
Couldn’t you tie a metal ring of a similar diameter as the descender towards the base of the line?
