While Signal is delivering one good feature at a time, Telegram YOLOs security, and hoards all users into their roach motel, feeding users excellent UX that's completely insecure. People get accustomed to things that Signal will never be able to match, like ridiculously low latency when you don't have to send separate E2EE message to each group member. Signal will never be safe enough for everyone, e.g. Cwtch handles metadata much better. But not all people need the metadata security, 3/
You can't have both simple usernames and p2p connectivity. You can't have anonymity without Tor and Tor kills latency for (video) calls. You can't have endpoint security and message forwarding. Some features have hard limits architecture wise. Then there's the soft limits that require clever privacy by design. Like the Signal group chats. But clever, fantastic, secure design take time, and all features are maintenance burden. Good teams are small, and small teams have limited funding. 2/
The problem is that secure messaging apps all have strengths and weaknesses. Telegram adding group chats is a bit of client-side code that talks to server. For Signal, v2 groups was a two dozen page research paper of security proofs for the protocol. It was incredible how much they managed to provide without server having control, like group admins without server being in charge. They more or less pioneered that. Mm. This isn't a thing where there's second chances when things go wrong. That's why I see the pic as the minimized harm. Kids will break the rules. I did as a kid. We filled a steel table leg full of egg cracker firework grains. It made one hell of a show but it was still one of the stupidest risks I've taken. I'd imagine if I had seen those pics, that would've made me rethink it back then.
