The US tested jetpacks in ww2 for river crossings (amongst other things), the danger of roasting yourself was one of the reasons they stopped development

Well, the burns were actually one of the lesser reasons. The biggest issue was that lobbing yourself into the air at a controllable speed during an opposed river crossing ALSO happened to make you a super easy and obvious target for the enemy, so using them would be suicidal. Cover and concealment is important, after all.

Flying cars will never happen. It's a fun thing in films and TV, but from a practicality POV, they are a complete dead end. Look at how many people you already can't trust in a car when it is constrained by the ground and gravity. Would anyone trust those same people with a third dimension they can move the car in?

THIS! I’ve been saying this for a long time. If you also factor in the non-stupid accidental/unintentional accidents people get into (think medical conditions, animal strikes, etc.), plenty of people have been killed or injured as a result. Now you add people who would intentionally use the vehicles as weapons (kamikaze style), all you really need are about a dozen cars to make 9/11 happen whenever some nutjobs wants to.

I can totally see flying cars happening ONLY if they are self driving, and ONLY if all self-driving vehicles are in constant communication with each other. Hell, a self-driving flying car might be safer than a self-driving ground car.

Personal automated drones are a more of transportation in some Chinese cities. But it's niche and not feasible in most cases

Just about the only way it could be done safely is basically flying automated taxis. And in that use case, automated ground transport is more efficient and safer. Even better if you put a bunch of them together, and give them their own path to travel and I've just reinvented trains, haven't I?

I think automation for aerial vehicles would be easier. Well, in regards to navigation. The heavy lifting flight controls have already mostly been tackled by drones.
Once in the vehicle it'd chart a course and report it to a local flight path registry for path conflict corrections. Then just fly straight up, follow the path to the next landing location, and straight down.
Doesn't seem nearly as complex as a ground based vehicle concerned with following narrow roads & heavy obstacle avoidance.

Assume you have as many flying cars as we currently have driving cars. Now take into account that jet wash and rotor wash are a thing. That crosswinds are a thing. Snow is a thing. And so on. Each of these massively increases the complexity of that flight path registry. Then remember that every crash means deaths - falling from any viable height in a sealed, small box can never be safe.

As a personal vehicle, it seems less likely. Problems with affordability and volume. As a sort of public transport service, it seems much more viable.
Regardless, there'd have to be several things to assist. The beauty of the air is that there's lots of vertical space to fit more vehicles. Allowing an area sufficiently large enough around paths to reduce conflicts, recognizing dangerous weather conditions, and having some sort of landing pad/parking structure/dock thing would be necessary. »

« I'm not saying there wouldn't be a lot of things to work out, but simply that self driving vehicles are likely more difficult to do. They have to manage a minefield of obstacles at all times as well as navigate with potentially outdated information and improperly marked roads.
Dangerous weather also affects driving conditions. Floods, heavy winds, downed limbs, landslides, etc. Not to mention they have to react to unpredictable human drivers, which aren't going away anytime soon.
