The jack on the outside is divided into 3 sections (notice the 2 black lines) top of the jack is 'Tip', middle is 'Ring', bottom is 'Sleeve'. TRS. Tip and ring are designated signals to send stereo audio (last and right channel) through the wire. That's why they're connected to red and white inputs. The sleeve is a ground. 3 designated channels, stereo output. It's a clever way to make a connection between the 2 without a prior adapter.
