Incidentally I think The Martian is one of the best examples of an actual adaptation. The things it changes are minor, and clearly of service to the plot and pacing of the movie or simply due to obvious incompatibilities between written media and video. It's extremely faithful in a way that most adaptations aren't.
The source for this is The Martian. Film adaptation of a book by Andy Weir, who's done a number of things; Project Hail Mary is the other big hit. It does depend, yes, but you're not usually going to open it up and see something that's an immediate HR dismissal. Complaint maybe, but compared to Oglaf for example it's significantly tamer.
Mark Meer has 108 acting credits at the moment. 13 of those were before Mass Effect, and none of them were main character roles.Jennifer Hale has 524, and I'm not going to bother counting how many of them were before Mass Effect. If I remember right, they had Jennifer Hale for female Shephard, and then some random comedian with little to no acting experience doing the male voice. I thought it was a flat and lifeless performance, but it's realistically not a fair comparison to Hale.
