Actually it was different - I wanted to see if they survived so I looked it up- this was in 2020 - two climbers, Mike Horn and Fred Roux - GoPro not involved though

#3 My latest kitten (courtesy of the Cat Distribution System and the storm drain next to my house) has taken to jumping on my shoulder and riding around, like a parrot on a pirate's shoulder. Despite the razor blade claws, it's totally adorable. Yet I'm afraid of allowing her to continue. I've raised some very large cats over the years and I don't want to end up with a musculo-skeletal disorder that I'd have to explain to a doctor.

#2 as much as i enjoy AppleTVs Foundation, it still boggles my mind that theyve adapted it but nobodys done any of the robot stories. Theyre infinitely more approachable than Foundations grand narrative, at their heart theyre just detective stories, not far off from your average CBS procedural, so why not CSI Trantor?

That one episode of The Mandalorian everybody hated reminded me a lot of a robots story.

2 days ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Which episode was that?

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The robot murder mystery one. Where Doc Brown was spiking the robots drinks for the glory of the Confederacy.

Were they using forced prospective? I know they used smaller dummies when the stuntman was climbing the cliffs of insanity during the wide shots, but I think it was straightforward besides that

#5 Uranium is so heavy that 100kg would easily fit in a 1.5 gallon jug

2 days ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's why before it was officially designed as "uranium", it was commonly referred to as "urmomium"

2 days ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yes, but how much would it weigh?

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

220 pounds 7.4 ounces.

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A collection of uranium with a mass of 100KG would weigh about 981 newtons (at the equator on earth, weight varies with gravitational attraction).

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The critical mass is less than half that so it wouldn't stay in the jug very long.

2 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Only if it is refined, though that is also the best way to spread the glitter

2 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Excellent, we no longer need to wait for the next tornado to hit. Alternative glitter distribution system - build glitter factories everywhere along tornado alley, a tornado is bound to hit one sooner or later

I live part-time in literal Antarctica. Ice-related safety is one of the few things I don't fuck around with

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ohhh interesting! What else should we know about ice safety in Antarctica? (If you don't mind sharing more 😊)

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Crevasses can be hidden by stiff packed snow and hide cracks hundreds of feet deep. You could walk along the same spot a dozen times, then have the ice below you swallow you whole the next. SAR has to come out with ground-penetrating radar to scan the area for hidden holes. They mark areas of deadly hazard with black flags, but they only know about the ones they know about, so...
Safe trails are marked with red and/or green flags. Don't leave the marked trail.

Oh dang that is terrifying

#5 As soon as someone figures out what's heavier - a pound of feathers or a pound of lead - we'll get started on this new problem.

2 days ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 1

The pound of feathers is much heavier because you must also bear the weight of your actions, either pulling feathers from a live goose, or murdering it in cold blood for the crime of running afoul of you and stripping it bare.

2 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I auto-corrected and thought thyrell was asking about the volume of glitter: "pretty small bag"

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you have 1 bucket with 5 gallons and another bucket with 8 gallons. How manny buckets do you have?

2 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

two buckets of different sizes, provided that both buckets are full at 5 and 8 gallons.

both are, technically, a unit of mass, which has a 1-to-1 correspondence to weight at a particular place.

Though I'm suddenly unclear about if the displacement weight is removed from the weight of things. A quick check tells me that would be "apparent weight" vs "weight"

2 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pounds, grams (and any variant of gram), tonnes, etc... are all units of mass. Newtons are the primary unit of weight (force applied downward). Most of the time, when someone asks how heavy a thing is, we don't actually care how much force it is applying down and what we really want to know is how much *stuff* (mass) it has in it. Mass is consistent, force downwards depends on gravity. You have X pounds of mass no matter where you are, but a lot fewer newtons on the moon as opposed to the earth.

2 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This has been well established in internet discourse: it's the pound of feathers. The pound of lead is just the mass of metal being acted upon by a positive gravitational field. The pound of feathers includes the mass, but has the added weight of what you did to those poor birds to get it.

2 days ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 0

That’s heavy

2 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But you had to mine and refine that lead and the cost to the environment should also weigh heavily on your psyche

2 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Good rebuttal

2 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

So, a pound of feathers naturally shed/dropped/cast/whatever by birds just living their lives would be lighter than a pound of plucked feathers. Interesting.

2 days ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Have you ever seen free range lead? No... they capture it, force it from its home, and literally liquify it through heat. But some people only worry about "carbon based lifeforms"

2 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

All right, Elanee. "Someone tortured the ore into this shape!"

If an airplane on a treadmill will take off?

2 days ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Mythbusters did that one

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, because the wheels do not apply or transfer force to the ground or the plane, they are simply like a bearing to reduce friction. The plane will still go forward from the force applied on it via its propeller(s) or jet engines, the wheels will simply spin faster. Cars apply force to the ground via their wheels to achieve forward propulsion, but planes generally do not need to.

2 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Wait hold up, does there not need to be air going over/under the wings at a certain speed to make the plane lift-off? And if so, would the plane also not need to move at a certain speed which would not happen if the plane stayed stationary on the treadmill?

2 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The plane won't be stationary on the treadmill, it'll move forward, because the treadmill doesn't exert any relevant amount of force on the plane. The only action the treadmill has on the plane is to raise the speed of the wheels. If the plane had perfect frictionless wheels, if you stuck it on the treadmill without using the engines, it wouldn't move backwards. The wheels have no role in the movement of the plane, they are simply bearings to reduce friction between the plane and the ground.
