I can't understand how police think they can come stop people from talking when this is EXACTLY what the first amendment is about.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." !!!to petition the Government for a redress of grievances!!!

"Tonight, July 21, another packed Grayslake board meeting had residents and allies from across Lake County demanding action be taken to stop the T5 hyperscale data center.

The village board limited comments and had police escort away commenters who went over the two minute limit. After Mayor Elizabeth Davies ended the meeting before all Grayslake residents present could speak, one resident took to the microphone to give her comments anyway. Community members formed a wall around her so she could give it without interruption by police.

Big tech and the billionaires pushing data centers into our communities may have the money, but our communities have the people power. We can organize together to win a society for the workers, not the billionaires."

Then they use their flock cameras to go arrest them later.

Is this the democracy in the USA that everyone keeps talking about? And then the orange moron complains about Germany?

1 week ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Right now he's whining about Canada. Again. Brand new 50% tariffs sweeping across the country because he's so fucking fixated on breaking our economy so we comply with his dreams of expanding the US borders as a monument to his juvenile views on a legacy.

1 week ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Germany isn't being very democratic either. Like I don't know what Trump said about Germany, but they are Israel's second largest arms provider, and in Berlin the police beat peaceful Free Palestine protesters every time.

True, AFD is MAGA, CSU/CDU has ties to heritage foundation and Thiel, we are just one really stupid election away from Magaland 2. And every indicator points towards idiocracy unfortunately.

ACAB. These cops need to be reminded that the community tolerates their presence so long as they remain within the boundaries set by the community. That reminder may take the form of severe and repeated beatings.

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

bit of backstory here, one of the reasons we are seeing so many datacenters is Nividia and other equipment suppliers are making the hardware to not be upgradeable. these data centers last for 2-3 yrs max before the tech is outdated. it is cheaper to build a new one as the "new model" doesnt fit the same building footprint / power / racks - etc... apparently a lot of these are already non-operational and this is being used to grab land and infrastructure using government grants >

1 week ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

to develop out the resources with later plans to scrap the data center and put in something else. As usual we foot the bill and get none of the benefit later on like we have with the fiber install across the US.

The US Constitution is meaningless. The current president set the precedent that people in positions of power can do whatever they want and get away with it. So anyone with any modicum of authority believes that applies to them, too. There is no fixing this. There is no going back. The only way is forward, and that forward path is going to be long and difficult. Were I physically within the United States, I would do my part. I am not. All I can do is watch, and hope the people break free.

Every county commissioner meeting I ever attended had a typical 2 minute comment period for each person that wanted to speak. Sometimes a single person was allowed to speak for a group and they would give their spokesperson their 2 minutes. It usually worked out well enough.

3 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the rule isnt a data center rule, city councils have speaking time rules because otherwise they will literally never end

you literally dont know what you're talking about by saying it violates the first amendment

If you disagree do you think a 2 hour council meeting should alow someone to go up there and talk about how all LGBTQ people should be put to death for two straight hours?

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I run city council meetings and they already go on for hours and there is always someone that wants to talk forever

In my recollection we've never had police go up to them though, thats insane, we just turn the mic off if they go more than 30 seconds over time

1 week ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They have already sold out they do not care about earning trust back

They are absolutely representing the people they serve.

1 week ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

And by "people" they mean "corporate entities" who eroded the law so much that they also can have "personhood".

1 week ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

I mean, ultimately, it’s the people behind those entities. They are not a faceless, nameless mist. They have just manipulated the system of laws so that they are not subject to them. It’s actual individuals whose instructions they follow, to those individuals’ benefit and everyone else’s detriment.

1 week ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Those individuals may be the chief officers of the company, but that company is itself beholden to the investors. Literally. Legally. They have found a way to redistribute the blame back to us.

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm just curious about the police in this situation. Doesn't he live in the same community? Does he simply not care, or is there some kind of power structure that benefits him? I don't understand. It seems like, rather than helping the community stand up to these oligarchs and address the underlying problem, he's focused on suppressing the people instead.

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's the job.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He almost certainly does not live in the same community. Piece of shit pig motherfuckers almost always live outside of the cities they work, usually in some bedroom community or exurb. He also very much does not care, and there is a huge power structure that insures he is never held accountable, and the worst punishment he will ever face is a stress-related disability retirement that gets him a large lifetime pension.

None of our local news is covering this. Gee, wonder why.

1 week ago | Likes 269 Dislikes 2

What local news? They're all owned by like three companies

1 week ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Two reasons. 1. They support the billionaire class. 2. They fired all the journalists who could have covered local news & local politics. But, you already knew that. :-)

1 week ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Craigslist (the internet) & consumers

Local newspapers paid their journalists by selling ads & classified ads. When Craigslist rolled in and the money dried up

Also consumers: Since consumers flock to the dumpster fire click bait headlines, "news" orgs then measure newsworthy-ness based on what drives clicks, not what is actually important

We need a new business model, but won't get it until there is money in reporting on hard news that is boring to read about

1 week ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Which won't happen unless there are consequences for those deliberately manipulating people with those malicious sites. Like how facebook actively promotes false news stories, because they apparently get more clickthroughs on ads.

We really need a multistate lawsuit like what happened with tobacco, but with social media companies. Social media doesn't have to be awful & addictive & make society worse.

6 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No. The tobacco companies paid pennies on the dollar. They knowingly sold deadly products to kids. They knowingly lied about the danger of their products. They should have faced criminal charges. They should have faced wrongful death suits for everyone who died of lung cancer, throat cancer etc. They should have been destroyed. Instead they got some new rules and had to pay out some money, but less than what they made. The states essentially charged them a death fee and then let them continue.

6 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get people hating Instagram, but there are so many of these events I see directly posted by the people who took the footage, and often the footage isn't picked up by the news. Social media is the only way to keep up with what's happening.

Bastards, all of them. Death's too good for them. We need to bring the word "Pillory" back into common usage. And I guarantee had that room not been FULL OF VERY WHITE PEOPLE, there would have been beatings by the cops.

Check his wife. Is she "Clumsy" and get bruised often? Domestic Abuse isn't funny, but it is more common in Cop families than general population.

1 week ago | Likes 103 Dislikes 8

I know in theory, cops can be good people, because my dad was. (People he'd arrested gave our family condolences when he died.) But I don't trust cops because I met some of his coworkers. One was arrested for statutory involving a teen in the ride along program. Others for drug dealing.

Reeks of effort. I have no great desire to watch anyone suffer. Okay, maybe Stephen Miller. But simply being able to forget that certain people ever existed is an appealing thought from time to time. No guillotine needed. No public spectacle. Just a better world.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not that much effort but I understand not wanting to watch someone die like an insect in the garden. I might be meaner spirited then most.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Still the freest country in the world? Some Americans will say yes, and justify their position by pointing out that they still have guns. Stupid sheep. The enemies of freedom figured you out a long time ago. As long they let you keep your bang-bang toys you would let them take away everything else. "The only right we really need is the right to bear arms." Okay then, that is the only right you shall have.

1 week ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 2

Note that guns help in getting away with, say... and I say this purely for informational purposes of course... physically sabotaging a datacenter. Not only with being able to avoid arrest while carrying out the act, but because you don't need to burn the building down to destroy them. Just pump a few rounds into the equipment; they're basically just a bunch of graphics cards linked together. Fragile.

6 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you know how many bullets it would take to destroy - completely and permanently - a data centre? And how long it would take? A very rough guide is one carefully aimed (target is <5 cm tall but very deep) shot per 2 kW.

5 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Again - speaking purely hypothetically and for informational purposes - you don't have to completely destroy a data center to cause expensive and massive damage.

Then again, as long as everything's running, water guns are at least as effective. Electronic devices do not enjoy getting wet.

5 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're convinced that owning their bangsticks means nobody can take anything else away from them. This fails on two points. One, they're happily giving everything up from fear of having it taken. Two, their beloved arms wouldn't actually protect them in the first place; to quote Jim Jefferies, "You do realize the government has drones, right? You're bringing a gun to a drone fight."

I don’t know why people are so damn excited that we own guns. If we had a well armed militia, we wouldn’t have the Trump regime. There are more of us who want him out than there are maga, but having more guns than people in the US, doesn’t mean we have more guns than the military, or equal weapons to the military. A well regulated militia was a lot easier when the founders wrote our constitution. Now? There isn’t a singular military on earth as powerful, let alone a population of civilians.

Guilt is about internal consequences. There are many things each of us could do without consequences but don't because we would feel guilt. I think it's because these bastards don't feel guilt so they look for situations where they won't face consequences for horrible acts.

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1 week ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I don’t think even policemen get paid much. Either they have to work loads of overtime or get side jobs. Of then there are the corrupt ones, adrenaline junkies, or punks that just like being over people that stay.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

To be sure, the job appeals to damaged men with authoritarian leanings. No matter how altruistic an applicant is, they're probably primed for "law and order" to begin with. On the matter of pay, cops are masters of milking the clock and logging OT. To say nothing of lucrative side hustles as "security" at malls, schools, shops and the like. They don't make anybody much safer (demonstrably less so in schools), but it pays BANK.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There was an article some years ago about a high-ranking cop here (PNW) who regularly cleared $700K per year, gaming the OT and "working" off the clock in uniform doing security work at various places (which is technically illegal, but when has that ever stopped a cop?). There was a brief, local media frenzy, and then it vanished. I'm sure he's still doing all the same things today.
