Kinda yes & kinda no. If lending money is a service then paying a wage for that service is separate from the value potential of the money. If I give you $20 and you promise to pay back $25, then the moment I give you the money, $5 is instantly created in ROI for me. I’m not trading a good or service. I’m essentially buying $25 for $20. BUT there’s risk that you won’t pay it back and I’ll lose $20.
So I’m not in finance, but here goes. With a finite-ish supply of gold, eventually there wouldn’t be enough to back money w/o continuing to increase gold value in order to print more money. As for profit, INTEREST is the only way that money is actually created from nothing. Lenders are a necessary lever in the stability and creation of money. Having a stable backing, like the dollar, ensures a type of bedrock baseline that can be used to prevent/deter currency fluctuations & manage inflation.

@op I forgive you too. Best guess, we all forgive you. But the most important thing here is that you forgive yourself. There is magic in the effort you give, the result is unpredictable. You hope for the result but you can only control the effort. Stay strong. Just think of how experienced you are at this point. All you learned getting to this point will make you stronger.
