Portable yes, battery powered no. The batteries in that thing will heat up a TON. However many watts of optical power are being directed at the plate, more are being drawn from the batteries. Batteries have their own internal resistance, and the power conversion circuit and laser itself have efficiency losses. Imagine how it would look to run an air compressor or arc welder off of a battery. If the batteries don’t overheat and explode/melt, I expect the charge to last minutes at best.
For me it’s superlatives and absolutes. Few rules or broad statement exist without exceptions or stand without more details.
I challenge you to name a scenario that involves a campfire where a Jerry can of gasoline is the right solution.
Imagine a battery powered arc welder, and how long that would last. I’d be ready to believe they drained half a full battery just making this short demo. Plug it in, and sure. But god what a terrible thing to run on battery…

It’s wild to think there are people who understand the potential misuse of such vast data, but also think barreling in headfirst to allowing the creation of such data sets with no guard rails is an acceptable path. The concept of privacy and anonymity simply as a precaution against abuse seems worthless to a lot people these days.
It laughable how much of humanity seems blissfully unaware of just how fucking dangerous and miserable the world was. And they seem hell bent on returning to such a world, because they see prevention against harms they have not suffered as a waste.

I finally have a use for AI at work. It plays the role of “idiot product manager with no technical depth”. Helps me review and trim my PowerPoints for the important detailed information that they wont bother reading, and replace it with a bold unjustified claim. Then I will then explain verbally when challenged cause it won’t sink in otherwise.
Doesn’t matter as long as the mechanical pencil looks cool enough that I can pretend it’s a spaceship while bored in class -me in high school

Been reading a bunch of the Fauci journal entries, and the criticism of them. Two main reactions:
1: people don’t know how science or investigative processes work. For example they seem to think that refusing to rule out a possibility is the same as believing it is true.
2: people find it audacious that a nerd scientist could be shocked by sudden national notoriety and made comments about it in a personal journal.
I know, I’m being pedantic and shitty, but I can’t get over the title. Things can absolutely be truly broken. They can be broken and no longer have the characteristics or serve the purpose they did before. However, just because something got broken and cannot be repaired does not mean it is without worth or value.
That’s where my mind went
Picture it. A centrist party of spineless democrats and non-maga republicans, maintaining the status quo, and competing against the DSA and MAGA as the left and right wings. 20 years later it will be back to a two party system, and the only question is which two.

And the gap left between the competence of criminals/lawyers and the incompetence of the justice system is left to be filled by an angry public that feels justice is rarely served. Traditionally such cases became the domain of civil court, in which the poor have no means to participate. So they seek vindication in other ways.
It is baked into our justice system that it should be easier for a guilty person to escape consequences than for an innocent person to be imprisoned. And yet this alignment both fails spectacularly (see every person exonerated after decades in prison), and invites retribution and anger from those who suffered without seeing justice served. So many gaps in our system invite the public to bring their own biased vindications into play.
I go to imgur specifically to get a wash of different shit. It’s social media on shuffle, and the vibe is constantly in flux. Wanting to filter out specific stuff kinda defeats the purpose for me. I’m glad to be reminded of other perspective that enjoy things I may not, even if that perspective is being horny for a strip club in a PG13 movie. Keeps me grounded lol.
The only sensible way to learn calculus is while studying Newtonian physics. If studying differential equations or Fourier transforms, be in some optics courses.

Eh, I was thinking the same thing, but it turns out this is feasible. If you have enough power, the near field effects of dipole heating can still cook you even at RF frequencies. It works a lot better at microwave frequencies (specifically about 2.4 GHz) but it seems even 1-30MHz can still cook you if you are close enough (like touching it) with enough power.
