You don't need data centers for this. You pick up some chatter about someone getting an abortion. Look them up using the police databases, get plates, vehicles, etc. Correlate phone data with her address. The cameras have tracking built in. Between the cameras and phone location tracking it's pretty easy to follow someone, especially with privileged access.

No a general you doesn't need it, but they do. They'll chose one over a person any day. People might not be loyal, might have doubts, might grow a conscience, or might even just get greedy and leak the truth.
Also people they can be sure of the loyalty of are rare enough that they want them in other positions. There's not enough of them in the US to run a totalitarian government let alone built one up from where they currently are.

I'm sorry, where exactly did you get the impression I was making a moral argument? It doesn't matter how much the FBI would love a crime-sniffing chatbot- it doesn't fucking exist. LLMs cannot collect evidence like that and the actual infrastructure of AI databases is useless for the date storage mass surveillance requires. Ours are owned by the local police departments/Sherriff dept. They are used in areas to provide "extra vigilance". I only see them in poor, mostly minority areas.

Im on a police scanner page and they pick up stolen cars all the time on them, a car after robbing a bank, and a car that kidnapprd a kid. If you watch The First 48, the pick up murder suspect plates and track them down a lot too. Not saying they can't use them for bad too
