my understanding at the time was that the organizers had told her, and her trainer, that grapple and 17 second takedowns make for a boring show and she needed to be a striker to stay interesting enough to continue to be put on the card. She and her trainer said okay, and then tried to turn a grappler into a striker at which point she got knocked out twice in a row and bailed.

No, it wasn't. Ginas career washed up almost 20 years ago. All but two of her fights were against newbies, in a short lived, new, league. She got wiped out in her first strikeforce match when she fought someone who could actually fight. She is one of the most over rated fighters ever. Ronda is no where near as good as the best in mma currently, but she's far better. She knows how to grapple and holds an olympic judo bronze. She's ended 3 other fights faster than this one.

Rouseys two losses were against women who kept fighting and doing decently in the UFC for 7-8 years after that fight, and all of Rousey's fights were title fights in strikeforce or UFC, aka vs at least decent fighters. Ginas fights were in new leagues, 4-6 years before women were in the UFC, against whoever they scraped up out of local gyms. She had the one strikeforce title fight, vs someone who can actually fight, lost in the first round, and quit fighting for the last almost 20 years.
