signorney weaver got lucky being a nerd that's into sci fi and being smart enough to be in some of the better sci fi movies of the time. Even some of the weird ones she was in, she was still one of the highlights in them.

I remember watching Alien at age 8 or 9 and it forming absolutely all the endpoints for horror and scifi in my brain. I also remember going to the videostore every week once this one came out. The two best movies in my opinion. The others were good as well, but these two take the cake and add whipped cream.

One of my top five movies of all time. One of my first memories is being around 4 or 5 years old and visiting a science museum in the DFW area that had an exhibit featuring the full size Alien Queen and power loader puppets used in the filming. Freaked me the hell out. The only thing that hasn't aged well is Jenette Goldstein's brownface as Vasquez, although her performance is immaculate.

I had the chance to talk to her at length at one of the sci-fi conversations. There was no one at her booth so we chatted for about 20 minutes. It was less about quitting acting than just never doing it again. A fine difference for sure, but I got her point. She just went on to do other things and she did become a teacher in California. She was at her booth with her husband and they were both lovely people to talk to.
I also got to talk to Lance Henriksen for a while, too. Pretty nice people.

Alien movies all have a different vibes:
1. pure horror/claustrophobia
2. marines vs. monsters + parenthood
3. expand on lore + definition of morality
4. body horror and human nature... and I LOVE them all

Ditto. I saw Star Wars back in '77 and went that's really impressive. Then I saw Alien a couple of years later. It scared me senseless. I've been a huge fan ever since. Good, bad or ugly.

Well, since Alien represented a completely new kind of space horror, I consider this first film absolutely groundbreaking and perfectly directed. Each of the three subsequent Alien movies was fantastic in its own way, but only the first one had me digging my fingernails into the armrests.

In each of the first two movies Ripley survived because she made smart choices and did the right thing. Newt and Hicks survived for the same reasons in #2. #3 blew all of that up. There were plenty of other ways they could have written Newt and Hicks out of the script without trampling on the ending of #2. IMHO.

Your mileage may vary quite a lot for 3&4. I don't mind 3, but overall my recommendation is always the same for Terminator, Alien and Predator: Watch the first two, after that the quality takes a plunge.

I agree! I hated Aliens 3 and Predator 2. I thought Terminator 3 didn't suck.
