The scale of the universe is truly impressive.Billions of light-years shape the cosmos down to the Planck length, the smallest particle of matter. Our reality unfolds somewhere in between

1) this was way too fast

2) the creator did a grave disservice by not including dickbutt at some point, if not more than once

No rick roll?... I mean honestly, atoms generally don't have letters on them and when you travel in that direction it generally more or less looks the same regardless of scale... electron clouds or nebulas... who knows what you are looking at... which is why you always have to make sure your local axial dekrastigator settings are in order before you go pressing buttons all willy-nilly... "look twice, that'll be nice" as the manual says... I think... or that could have been on a fortune cookie?

"How can this interesting information be presented in the most fucking annoying, useless way possible?" OP: Hold my bong water.

That's just peanuts to space.

Why no dickbutt?

And the crazy thing is humans are, by orders of magnitude, closer to the size of the observable universe than the nucleus of an atom

We're the hillbillies of the universe

I remember watching powers of ten (an updated version) in IMAX at the National Air and Space Museum when I was maybe 12-13 and it just blew my mind. Fundamentally altered my view on life.

Would have been a really good opportunity to add Dickbutt

I thought this was gonna with one of those "close ad x" punchlines.

Death Star was a nice touch

Wait, that wasn’t a moon!

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is there a version of this that goes at a speed where you can actually read and examine it rather than trying to firehoseblast a vague impression of knowledge into the ADD generation?

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Humans are ~400 million times closer to the size of the observable universe than they are to the Planck length.

3 weeks ago | Likes 89 Dislikes 0

It's alarming that, although the Planck length arises naturally from physical constants, there's so many orders of magnitude between it and the smallest thing we think we know anything about. All those "empty" length scales zoomed through here surely aren't really empty -- we just have absolutely no idea what's there, despite reason to believe they exist.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yowza, that's one hell of a TIL.

3 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Seriously, that fucked up scale of the Universe, from Planck length to Light Years is why we need a fuckin "Theory of Everything," so bad; Relativity and Quanta do not get along very well, currently. -_- LOL!

3 weeks ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 2

I need to go sit down

3 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Addendum; what has given me the willies, since the early fuckin 90s, was "Field, Wave, Vibrating String," making up "particles," which are represented as those balls (particles); YET they ONLY, "appear," as particles, cuz we're fuckin looking at them &/or how we're "looking," at them. "Technically," nothing's really solid, it's just all "electromagnetic quanta," that are like cosplaying as solids & particles. A century later, & Quantum Mechanics is still fuckin defined by Schrödinger's cat JOKE!

3 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I think a better way of looking at it is that solidness is an emergent property of fields interacting

3 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Oh, that's a neat way to see it, but I learned it's about Quantum Greater &/or Lesser "Forces, & assorted quanta Spin directions, + speeds (I think)" forming gangs, that don't get along with other forces, gangs, or literally repel each other. The only reason I know about this on a tangible level, is from Cosmos with Neil deGrasse Tyson, describing that kid game with "I'm not touching you," & took it down to the Quana level, to show no matter how hard you push or try, you're not touching >>

3 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

>> due to repellant "Forces," WHILE when touching, "particles jump." AND all this shit, taken down to "Quanta," even "massless," Photons, behave as "particles," yet are just EM quanta vibrating and spinning like all other "particles". I WANT a fuckin "Theory of Everything". LOL!

A friend of mine did this: https://www.everything.one/

Is this related to the video above?

3 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Well, it is about the same universe.

It is really nice

Your friend is really cool. I like this.

I expected Dickbutt

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had no idea an electron was THAT much smaller than protons and neutrons. The graphics they use in basic science classes is very misleading

3 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

There is no visual representation of atomic particles that isn't misleading.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good news / bad news: electrons aren't so much particles as they are probabilistic energy fields...

3 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Depends on whether/how you are measuring them. I prefer to think of it as: electrons are neither a particle nor a wave, nor a mixture of both, but rather a third unintuitive thing that we can conceptualize as either a particle or a wave depending on which is the more convenient metaphor at the time.

This "music" is SHIT.

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

A volume warning would have been nice though.

3 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Yes. Turn it up.

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Just to clarify, the Planck length is a unit of measurement, not a particle.

3 weeks ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 1

Like a *Parsec* is a term of distance, not time... Star Wars got it wrong

3 weeks ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

Star Wars got it wrong, or Han Solo was telling a bold faced lie to some farmboy on a rim planet who wanted to buy a trip on his ship?

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope. Han took a shortcut through more dangerous space, cutting a 20 parsec journey to less than 12. Or so says the internet.

3 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

That was the retcon, yes

3 weeks ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Is that what it was? I've seen all the movies but I've never followed any of the fan discourse.

3 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Short version; parsec is a measure of distance. Retcon is that the Falcon's hyperdrive is special enough that it can compensate for the black holes' distortion of reality, leading to shorter real-time space actually traveled. Truth is in the draft script; "Luke rolls his eyes at the obvious lie," ie, like someone saying their piece of shit F-150 can go a kajiggerlion miles on a tank of gas.

3 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

George Lucas had no fucking clue what a parsec is, anymore than the writers of Back to the Future knew what a gigawatt is.
