They aren't white as in Caucasian. I first saw the whole thing in my early 30s and have done reruns of it two or three more. I love the show, I'm white Norwegian and never ever thought of it as white people missing. It would hardly be a point since most of it is based on Asian cultures. I find it very strange that someone like to make a point of it being a good thing. Just say "no whitewashing instead". What they say instead is just racism.

Does anyone else dislike Katara in the Netflix version? In the cartoon, she was a badass, stubborn, firecracker who didn’t take shit from anyone while still being caring. In the Netflix version she just feels so bland. There’s hardly ever any emotion on her face. Not hating on the actress, but I just didn’t think her representation fit her character very well. Besides that, the others are finer and Zuko’s character is played really well.

I have no idea what other people think of the live action but uhhh.. I did not like it. It feels like an alien watched the show, misunderstood what people like about it, and then gave it to a good set designer/ costume artist.

Yes, I watched the first episode and it was a bit like watching a theater. The script is written for a series, but executed as a performance. Felt so unnatural I couldn't bear to watch anymore. I like a lot of the visuals but too much of it is so extremely CGI I'd rather see them skip it. And either way, the cartoon was already so good I don't see the need for a live action

I'm still laughing at a guy with a weedy flame challenge a woman who thrashed lots of benders already while being stopped to practice water bending by her tribe, a known healer and mean fighter at the same time, saved the literal saviour of that world multiple times, and surrounded by water, and thought he would be a challenge or an effort at least. No wonder he's always bested by her younger sister.

IMO I was having to force myself to watch it, only made it to ep 3. It looked good and was excited but they changed way to much. Ep 1, the water tribe has like 100+ people, in the cartoon they had less then 15-20 and it was the size of a camp not a village. later it showcased how devastated the water tribe was from the constant attacks, you could see they were a town/village but after so many loses they dwindled to a campsite. Also katara was way to weak at the start and they failed to show her-

Power, she was water bending a fish in a bubble and keeping it steady, in the live action she couldn't even get a bubble. In the cartoon she was raw iron ore and felt like she really been practicing on her own for years, in the show she wasn't even a discovered vein of iron. The cartoon showcased how strong she COULD be when she got angry but we never got that. They would of been better off doing a version were we saw team avatar grown up and making avatar city instead.

Agreed! It wasn't perfect, or anywhere near as good as the One Piece adaptation, but it's still way better than expected and definitely far superior to the movie.

I'm iffy on it. Not saying it was bad or wasn't good. Just they mixed around a few things that IMO had a weaker impact by not being on their own, or skipped/changed certain things. And because it felt relatively rushed (although I think minute for minute they're still pretty close) certain character developments were affected by it.

Unpopular opinion but it always bothered me Aang didn't kill Ozai. He almost lost and cost the entire war. I understand that life is meaningful but he was risking the lives of everyone outside the fire nation. it was his duty as the avatar to protect those around him despite his personal beliefs. Meanwhile Sokka was blowing up airships and getting a body count. Messages are a little all over the place. Enjoy my rant haha.

For me it was less of aang not killing ozai. It was more of the ass pull that was energy bending. It was set up, sure, but not nearly well enough for the payoff to not feel like an ass pull.

I think it's less about "I can't kill" than "I can't go in with the intent and plan to kill" because Aang has definitely iced a few people over the course of the series, or contributed to some deaths. If two highly trained navy seals can drown at sea in an operation where everyone saw them go over and could react immediately, some fire nation goons in armor getting launched over the side of a moving ship that can't stop is a death sentence.

That would make a martyr for the militant fire nation. Taking away his bending and allowing him to live to face justice humbles the perceived superiority of the Fire Nation. Gives an example that helps to neuter any legends and lost cause myths.

The Avatar can just pull a new ability out of their hat, and undo everything you've ever worked towards." Killing Ozai would just send the message of "you only need to be able to kill the Avatar first"

There were at least 2 or 3 giant supernatural creatures that helped Aang along on his journey, the lion turtle wasn't unique. In terms of dues ex machinas, this hardly qualifies.
Energybending makes sense as an Avatar-only thing and they established animals/spirits can teach people bending. They needed someone to teach it to Aang, why not have some ancient being who first granted people bending do it?

But Aang isn't just the Avatar, he's the Last Airbender too. The culture of the Air Nomads survives by his actions. If the Fire Nation forces him to abandon his people's principals of non-violence: then the genocide of the Air Nomads would be complete.
Defeating the Fire Nation without killing is the only victory for Aang, satisfying both his duties as Avatar and the as Last Airbender. Proving that his pacifism doesn't make him weaker.
Sokka ain't an Air Nomad so this isn't about him.

The bigger problem is that taking away Ozai's bending is a lazy asspull that sidesteps the entire issue without forcing Aang to make a choice and also undercuts the message. He didn't actually prove that pacifism didn't make him weaker, he proved that it did make him weaker but being the Avatar let him compensate for his weakness. I love ATLA but that part of the ending is just dogshit.

You're right as far as it being an asspull is concerned. For as important as it was to the ending; the possibility of taking away someone's bending should have been foreshadowed before hand.
But it holds thematically. Aang's pacifism is the only reason he sought the wisdom of the Lion Turtles in the first place. Aang proved himself not by making a hard choice, but seeking new solutions, and accepting personal risk to change the conditions of the test. You know, like a hero should.

But it doesn't hold thematically. Everything in the story builds up to Aang having to make the difficult choice of leaving Ozai alive (running the risk of him somehow becoming a problem again) and killing him (and therefore abandoning his principles). That choice is the emotional core of the climax and resolving it with an asspull that sidesteps the whole issue is bad and lazy writing.

I was in my 40s when my son said he wanted to watch this. I wasn’t interested but I agreed. The series was over but Nick was showing a couple of episodes every night as a marathon. We watched the first two and I immediately went out and bought the whole series that night. We binged over the next few days.

Closest is fire nation, mostly due to the island being partly based on Icelandic volcanoes with the culture being mostly south east asian with a splash of Japanese. So of course that means the Tibetian monk and the 2 Inuit characters are caucasian and the fire nation are Indian.

The clothing and architecture is almost exclusively inspired by Asia/India, with splashes of Mayan and Inuit. As for the characters, race doesn't always come across clearly in cartoons, but there's plenty of pale-skinned characters. OP is likely interpreting those characters to be Asian.

I didn't make the memes here, but I'm sure they were just saying that it's refreshing to see so much different racial/fantasy cultural representation in one series. Since the four nations were modeled on Arctic and central Asian real-life cultures, it makes sense to me that the characters would look like people from those ethnic groups.

One issue with "Arctic people" is that there's not a very clear definition of what the Arctic is. Simple way is everything above 66°N. There's also average temperature in July below 10°C.
Sami people are very white, but not blond hair blue eyes type. I know a couple of Siberians (Komi people), who are very white, with blue hair and blue eyes. Have the more round face features that's more common in the high Arctic

To be fair to the Boomerang, there was a fight scene where all of them piled on Azula, and Azula, the child genius/prodigy to which I would argue have the strongest fire bending abilities because blue flames and and a military and volleyball genius and only ever lost once for plot reasons and going insane, dodged the boomerang instead of blocking it because she saw it as a threat.

She lost more than once in the series: The Chase had her lose at the end. She got away, but she was still defeated. Boiling Rock, Ty Lee kicked her rear. Being arrested afterwards doesn't negate Azula's loss. The volley ball episode, more of a social loss, but still a loss. One of her defining characteristics is being able to accept a defeat and move on or find a way to come back with a win at a later time

The Avatar is heavily based on the Dalai Lama, (including the test they do to identify objects belonging to the previous body) the belief is that the Dalai Lama can choose the body that he is born into. The 13th died in mid December and the 14th was born in early July implying that it is not the moment of conception (i don't know if he was a little premature) but happens during the pregnancy.
