Before we begin this round, I want to take a moment to thank our Veterans. These guys are the best of the best. They stood their watch with honor, courage, and commitment. They kept this country safe. They have sacrificed their lives for us. They have worked sleepless nights while you have rested comfortably.
To the Veterans of the United States Military, you stand properly relieved. Your watch has ended, but mine has only begun. You have permission lay below.
To the Veterans of Foreign Militaries, whether you guys were serving at a time of war or a time of peace with the US doesn't matter. You did what you had to do to protect those you loved. We may not have been on the same side of the conflict, but we still stood together for what each of us believed was right.
American or Foreign, I salute each and every one of you.
This one was both funny and awkward. I had just joined the Security Forces, hadn't even been on duty for a full 12 hours yet working the night shift. Roving the ship with my partner and we happen to catch these two gettin' lucky in a fan room.
I learned shortly after that this was NOT an uncommon thing. I think during the entire 9 month deployment I was with Security, there were roughly 50-60 personnel caught having sex.
So, this is kind of cool. Terrible, but it has a cool ending.
I never did get the full story of how it happened but from what I understand one of the aircraft shifted and rolled forward, completely crushing this guys foot.
He gets medevac'd off the ship ends up losing his foot and gets fitted with a prosthetic.
Now here's the cool part. This guy was such a bad ass that on the day we returned to Home Port from deployment, they fly him BACK out to our ship just so he could be the first person to walk off the brow! To some of you, that might not seem like such a big deal but traditionally the CO is the first person off the ship. It was a huge, HUGE honor for this guy.
Yep. Feeding nearly five thousand people three meals a day ain't cheap, so how does the Navy do it? Buy the cheapest food they can.
Edit: see, kids, this is why you never, ever believe anything a sailor says. I had always, without fail been told that is what NSHC stood for. Apparently not.
Seriously. I can't stress this enough. Here's a pro-tip to anyone considering enlistment. KEEP YOUR NAKED PHOTOS IN YOUR EMAIL. I can't touch your email without reasonable suspicion. Go ahead, save the email! But for the love of god DON'T download the attachments!
But if you save that crap on MY servers, I WILL find it and I WILL be forced to report you. I had to give a written report to my divo on a monthly basis of any image files found on the network.
This was a great day. Snuck about a dozen nerf guns on board and we had an all out war in the server room. Our collective assholes puckered up nice and tight once the divo got beamed by one...
Until he grabbed the gun out of someone's hand and started shooting back.
Ugh. Just because you have an IT cert, doesn't mean you know how to do my job. A YN is a Yeoman. A paper pusher. A secretary. A YN is not an IT.
I don't give a crap if you're a First Class, Chief, or even a Master Chief. If you're not an IT, ET, or any other I-Branch rate don't tell me how to do my job.
Besides, it's only A+. That's like the IT version of a GED.
Best abuse of power EVER. I would have gotten in so much trouble if I'd ever gotten caught for this one. Internet privilege on my ship was like winning the lotto.
If you were a Chief or above, you had unlimited internet access. So, I made a fake Chief account, gave this guy the log in information and showed him how to use the Run As command to run his internet browser under the "Chief's" account. Voila! Internet access!
In return, he cooked all of my meals personally. CS3 Smith, if you're reading this, I still love you man.
This Chief was great. Most times, I was lucky to get a thank you for fixing someone's computer.
Admittedly, a can of soda from the ship's vending machines only cost us 65 cents, but this Chief instantly earned my love. I made damn sure to go out of my way to take care of him in the future.
OC (oleoresin capsicum) spray is like pepper spray on crack. The OC the Navy uses is like, a hundred times more potent than pepper spray you can get from a store.
The best way I've ever heard it described was "It felt like every cell in my eyes were being pierced by needles while the Devil pissed on my face"
But this poor girl? Wow. She either had absolutely no pain tolerance or was way too much of a drama queen but as soon as that stuff hit her face she was screaming.
Me? I couldn't breath because I was laughing so hard.
As an IT, there were times when I could go a week or more without ever seeing the outside of the ship. (And before one of you Nukes say it, I know ya'll had it much worse than us)
But anyway, I was talking to a friend of mine and we started to wonder if it was possible to forget we were on a ship. We rarely ever felt the ship rocking in the water because it was large. This sparked an idea and over the next three months I wrote a sci-fi novel about these people living in a space ship so massive that after generations they forgot they were even on a ship.
Yeah. When you're out to sea, it's easy to run out of things to do so I was super happy to let this suck away all my free time for a few months.
I've still got the rough draft. Keep meaning to go back and fix it up and see if I can get it published.
Dog Tax #1
So, I dun fooked up and missed my Tax on my last post. So, to make up for it, here's two. This one is of Thor after he got his eye replaced with a Cybernetic one. He's a nerd like that.
Dog Tax #2
Ignore the ugly one on the right. My dog is much better looking than I am.
mrsaucisse
WTF !! ONLY 3GB ?? Sailors are pussies.
ScotsGentleman
My older brother was a nuke ET on the Nimitz in the 80s. We would send him ten pounds of tootsie rolls every 90 days.
evil66gurl
My brother was on the Nimitz also until '85.
YouHaveToRiskItForTheBiscuit
As a former Sailor.....can confirm. Get used to catching people doing the stinky in the fan room. Its amazing how people react on deployment
swimbikerunrepeatswimbikerunrepeatswimbiwhatwasidoing
The fan room of love.
degenerator
OP is Navy-ugly. On dry land, not worth a 2nd look. After a few months at sea, however, I'd lure him to the fan room with a Mountain Dew.
TheMoistBandit
I have been OC'd. It's fucking awful. I didn't cry personally nor scream, but something like that, I can see why people do.
crewchief226
@OP I hope you do get it published! if not I would still like to read it.
thenakedchicken
I used to work with a chief who was on the old DDGs and at night he would delib make rounds making LOTS of noise to warn any 1/2
thenakedchicken
2/2 amorous couples of his approach. He reckoned some nights it was like watching roaches when you turn the lights on in the kitchen
datsickboy
Haji Cokes when in the Gulf, girls that were 4s starting to look like 9s after 7 months at sea. DEAD DEAD DEAD
Geo80
Tip: No one understands your military lingo. Half the time I have no idea what you're talking about. Use regular people language.
TheEdmontonMan
No need to be a dick about it, he just has to explain the acronyms beforehand.
kapp70
All your stories are interesting, now lemme tell you bout 100 proof peppermint schnapps w/ blue food coloring in nyquil bottles.or anyone1/2
kapp70
2. Needing an airplane bottle of whiskey, at cost, enlisted - low grade officers all knew the petty officer in charge, of that shit.urs trly

Meat quality in the military: Grade D for delicious

Sometimes E for Extra-Flavor
Snapneckscashchecks
didn't read any of this, just wanted to say seamen
Morgan96
These were great!! More please...
Coopernius
What boat were you on? I was on the Nassau for a while. Thing was a hunk of junk.
bernlack
"And before one of you Nukes say it, I know ya'll had it much worse than us" y'all*
TheHolmberg
Its weird...I remember hearing about the grade F and not fit for human consumption shit...but I never saw it...not even fucking once.
silnocus
Same. I did a lot of working parties and never once saw anything worse than "institution grade."
robberneepuls
Our food quality was good too (though the spices were antique) but this modern navy makes you wonder... http://imgur.com/yrr1g6y

#2 is exactly why mixed-gender crews are nothing but trouble. As a Chief with a 50/50 mix, all I saw was a Navy Times headline in my future.
datsickboy
Please don't delete the Nintendo emulators from the servers, CVIC needs something to do during down time!! :ninja:
DinosaurArmyMajor
you got oc sprayed in the face! and you are expressing severe discomfort! i can't even breath because lmfao! so hard.
Naduk
that book, i would read it , sounds like great concept
skyf24
this. id love to read it, fantastic concept for sure
GrizzlyBearCrossing
True dat. Come on op get it published!!
iamjackscompletelackofcompassion
I would also read this book. Maybe kinda like Aurora, but the computers crashed and lost the mission information.
Brandozip
AHHH why must you torture me so?
AtaSeaParks
This is basically what happens in "Pandorum", if you skip the first 5 min the studio added at the last minute. Great movie without that bit.
doggo
Entara: That book has been written. Several times. Read the ones already written, make yours unique.
OhDavidMyNacho
Pandorum
BASEDLORD
OP deliver!
madeofmess
You know, it sounds like a Charles Stross or China Mieville (if he made scifi) book.
wackywoohoopizzaman
Seconded
borderlandsman
it could be put on Wattpad if it can't be published, but I would love to see it published
DeusVaulthunter
I want this book.
marylanddd
there's a miniseries called Ascension that's sort of similar
RandomAbscessMemories
That's more of the reverse, isn't it?
Ketheres
@OP Just do it!
negativenull
commenting for potential updates
CyriousLordofDerp
Yah, saw that part and was like: "Oooh, WANT."
PlatonicBear
Check out Ascension on Netflix. Similar concept.
DysgraphicProgrammer
"Orphans of the Sky" by Robert A. Heinlein,
NorwayRat
.
CatWithHands
You beat me to it. Great book!
thjoth
Also The Book of the Long Sun by Gene Wolfe, although that's an interstellar generation ship and there's a lot of social exploration

Is poop deck what I really think it is?
MedusaTheSeduca
+1 for username/comment
bregma
I need an adult to explain all those TLAs.
Rogerdogerdangerduck
You just said TLA you have no need for such assistance LIAR!
DavidBrooker
He could be from a different industry that loves an entirely different set of TLAs. Like aerospace, or civilian IT.
Drenlin
...or the rest of the military.
DavidBrooker
Everyone loves TLAs!
phlat6
And for those who don't know, "TLA" is a TLA.
DavidBrooker
People in IT and CS love TLAs (and ETLAs). People in the military love TLAs (and ETLAs). IT in the military? Well, shit son.
ruferto
trap laden acronyms?

I started trying to work out how to make this comment when @WotsUhTheDeal 's comment was "6 hours ago"
ThatGuyWhoThinksEveryoneIsAPineapple
Huh, I suddenly have a weird urge to join the Navy...
DarthTickles
What's superliminal?
conniecpu
HEY YOU! JOIN THE NAVY!
StarShineSurreal
Saying that something is like pepper spray on crack and then accusing the poor girl of being a drama queen makes you sound like a dick.
ICantThinkOfAU
Not really, he said low pain tollerance, OR. He'll have seen people go through this before, in the UK at least for security details you (1)
ICantThinkOfAU
have to be sprayed/tazed before you can use them yourself, helps you know if using it would be considered reasonable.
willamjr
"A+ is the GED of IT." Haha true, true.
Turb0Yoda
Just get every A+ cert needed, knock em out 1 by 1, and get jobs easier.
Glumerlink
i'm not really sure if it's worth getting any certs these days, I got my A+ a long while ago but i'm honestly lost as to what to do now
bippityboppitybuttsex
get a CCIE, they are awesome.
Glumerlink
i mean...i could but it's the master end of CISCO i feel like they expect me to have more than a few years experience
kubi
True, but then again it's the GED of IT. If you have no other experience, at least that isn't nothing and sets you apart from the rest.
bippityboppitybuttsex
I have a CCIE, what is that?
wolfpreist
I disagree, you can get a job in IT without A+. I had a cousin tell me he wanted to go into IT and he had his A+. I told him that was cute.
Foxyfox135
So if getting the A+ isn't a path to IT, what is?
wolfpreist
Get a certification from MS or Cisco, If you want to work on end user PCs and/or servers go Microsoft, if you want to build networks 1/
wolfpreist
2/ IE configuring Routers and Layer2/3 switching go Cisco.
KillerTofu615
If a job in IT requests an A+ cert, they're basically saying that have no idea what IT does.
SepticStorm
A+ means you can identify the base components of a computer... my 5 yr old can do that.
only90skidswillgetthis
I had a gig installing desktop computers and laptops in small offices and it was sensible that they required A+. Not for a helpdesk.
wolfpreist
agreed
delightfullyhardenthusiast
My recruiters are still trying to get me to go nuke. Did my research and NOPE. Ima stay a corpsman thank you. I love these Navy stories OP.
scythe386
Get a job that you can do after getting out. Plus Nukes usually have good bonuses on signing and finishing school.
emmilely
My little brother was a nuke, just got out last year, making 6 figures in his city of choice. Hated most of his time in the Navy, though.
CHUBMARINES
Are you me? That's exactly what's going on with my recruiter. I want to be a corpsman and apparently my 99 ASVAB says otherwise
swimbikerunrepeatswimbikerunrepeatswimbiwhatwasidoing
Good call.
orlochavez
Nukes see a lot fewer bullets - especially if you go subs. I did 11 bullet-free years and I'm pretty happy about that.
carter1296
have fun not advancing
delightfullyhardenthusiast
Eh I plan on going FMF so if I do really well I shouldn't have a horribly hard time. Plus I'm walking in as an E3 so I've saved some time.
delightfullyhardenthusiast
Or at least that's my understanding. I'll have a better hold on things during and after A school.
carter1296
maybe, i see a lot of 2/3 year HMSN , good luck if thats what you plan on sticking with

delightfullyhardenthusiast
How long did it take you to reach 3rd class? Or did you have that out of A or C school?
Makinganaccountnameisannoying
Lucked out and picked up on my 1st try. Been trying to get 2nd for the past 3 years. Guy I came in with left boot as an E3, still an E3 now.
scythe386
FMF - Fleet Marine Force correct? Aka Greenside Corpsman?
Makinganaccountnameisannoying
Yep.
TallyReign
Hate to break it to you, that book you wrote, it's called "Orphans of the Sky" by Robert Heinlein...
Neurisko
Has been done numerous times by different authors. The Starlost was a tv series based on the idea.
CoeusDarksoul
If we tried to find a SciFi story that Heinlein & the other pioneers hadn't done, then there would be no sci-fi! Needs your touch is all! :)
hipsterhank
Proof of concept is all that is. Just because it's been done before doesn't mean it can't/shouldn't be done again.
emptykeg
Universe was adapted as a radio drama on Dimension X in the 1950s. One of my favorites.
Nuttsy
Also may or may not be part of an episode of the original Star Trek: "For the world is hollow and I have touched the sky." or somesuch.
Ronelyn
Don't give up. Plenty of good stories start from the same concept. Write well, and find something new to do with it. Pro writer here.
dootdootfloop
thanks im trying hard to write kids stories . its seems to be the crazier the better
ravnicrasol
Yup, starting concepts are copied/pasted all over the place, it's how you develop the idea that counts.
OthortheCute
Put that book in a blog form like The Martian was originally or Worm and people will read/proofread it for you.
helagos
Let's put an @OP on there so he'll see this comment.
OthortheCute
(Though by proofread they could tear through it mercilessly)
GGCrono
Sometimes that's what you need to hear. (Though there's no excuse for being a dick about doing so.)
Thisnamethingisdifficult
Were the couples you "found" always homosexual or both heterosexual and homosexual? Asking for a friend.
HarroldNutt
I was on a ship that wasn't integrated. Most of the homosexual stuff happened in port.
22wipemedown
I'm curious about that too
TorinMcQ
So, what does NSHC stand for? Google define doesn't help.
[deleted]
[deleted]
TorinMcQ
Then what did the Sailor try to say it meant?
conniecpu
Not Safe for Human Consumption
gamebrain89
I'm finding a bunch of different meanings but the most likely that I can find seems to be National Health Service Corps.
SkinknamedJormungandr
Navy Supplies Handling Company? Possibly.
Dowtchaboy
Nome Slaughterhouse Corporation? Finest Alaskan reindeer? Military and prisons do get stuff that is OK but might look too odd for retail.
PhillyMick67
OC spray is like getting faced fucked by satan...
dydokken
I always described it as dipping your face into hot frying oil. For the intense immediate pain and the lingering effect after.
ruferto
i punched someone by accident. no regrets tho, he was an asshole
scythe386
On the wounds while laughing maniacally at your almost undescribable pain (2/2)

It's like having sand and gasoline poured in your eyes while you have a really bad sunburn
Konoton
Just got sprayed today for my trade course (MP). It's 2.5 Million scolville. It's awful. Literally the worst thing to ever happen in my life
scythe386
I always like to describe it like someone has used a razor blade to slice your entire face, rub salt, spray lemon juice, and then piss (1/2)
only90skidswillgetthis
Why does usersub like it so much?
stretchedarmstrong
As a Marine we had to ground fight in the stuff, couldn't get off our knees. Shittiest day ever.
PhillyMick67
yeah man I was in the corps too, i ran the wrong way after i got sprayed lol
PhillyMick67
I actually was the NBC dude who ran the gas chamber and this stuff still sucked lol
scythe386
Two things. 1 you're a psychopath for going NBC lol. 2 after OC, the gas chamber was a cake walk and I'd go in naked b4 being OC'd again
PhillyMick67
NBC was the worst i actually got out and went reserves and lat moved to 03 lol
