Puppeteers, makeup artists, practical effects masters need to retake the industry. Since the rise of CGI it’s never really sold the visceral level of ‘wow’. Underwhelming.
I challenge those who grew up with CGI to pop in The Dark Crystal and tape your eyes open to ingest all the glory that is Jim Fckn Hensen.

The dark crystal? It's a fantasy world that's been dominated by the evil Skeksi, they hunt an almost extinct race known as Gelflings. They drain their essence via The Dark Crystal to stay young. The story follows a young Gelflings survivor who's been charged with stopping their reign of terror by healing the crystal. 11/10 no notes, an amazing movie

Nolan’s Odyssey was pretty good about making an attempt to use as much practical fx as possible and it shows. Looks so good

For real though. This shot was expensive for the time, but to do that long, slow, lingering transformation with CG would cost in the area of $100,000 a second. This required something like 20 individual rigs to make the transformation work, and cost around a million dollars at the time. Today, that's probably around 2-3 million to do practically, 16 million for chinsy looking CGI that looks worse the longer the screen lingers on it.
