That's if they follow the Colorado plan, if they follow the Washington plan all the money gets pocketed by assholes.

Decriminalizing drugs and using the taxes and prison/legal savings to establish MUCH BETTER education/rehab is kinda the only real answer.
Katabare
Let's be real here. If marijuana got legalized and people start making money from it, education is the last places surplus profit will go
tibbersbear
Like.... Colorado?
DefenderOfDog
on top of that you pay less for weed dealers to be in jail

Republicans don't like to spend more money on education because it will cause fewer republican voters.

Except it won't help much. They said the lottery would help with the school funding, and we're still in deep shit.

Poltergeist94
So is the fact that marijuana profits are going toward education WHY the government is fighting it's legalization?
They need stupid people to be prisoners or soldiers
floatationman
No, it's due to decades of sunk cost of a drug war + increasingly heavy lobbying from the private prison industry. Jailing potheads = $$$

As an Oklahoman, this is why I cant watch the news anymore. Every day another story about our failing school systems, and the solution is

sheblindedmewithscience
I second that. I stopped watching local news, too. I love my home, but gatdamn our legislators are worthless.
Except it's not. Do you not remember what happened when they said the same thing about the lottery? Schools STILL ended up fucked.
They pretty much went "Yeah, we'll redistribute it! Here's a few pennies."
Thats because most of the money didn't even go to the schools.

After legalizing, we need to get companies to stop testing for it, since it’s legal and all.
SmolTenk
Alcohol is legal too....
MistressLyda
In most jobs, yeah. Pilots, surgeons and so on? Maybe not.
geiokami
It could impair your job so they have every right to test for it.
Not talking same day use. You can lose your job if it’s in your system 3months after use. But you can be a functioning alcoholic and be ok.
They’ll test for it until there’s a way to test when you were last high. Unlike alcohol, you can fail a drug test for pot if it’s been days.
In the event of an accident they’d have a sobriety test performed by a doctor, and you’d still fail if you got high a few days ago
DropDeadFread
This would be great for Oklahoma because they had to shorten their school week to four days due to lack of funding.

A majority of schools have, but not all. The Teacher Walk-Out is planned, but the vast majority of the legislature doesn't care for (1)
(2) education. They took $10 million from the school budget the was financed from the lottery into other funds, rather than education.

Idaho cares actually. But i have to say it more so the districts that care rather then the state. At least the area I'm from does
Its true. Look it up. They cut taxes so low they don't have enough money for schools. And they need 3/4 majority to increase taxes.
vixiecat
Not all schools though. Still 5 days a week in my town ....for now. Not looking good though. Statewide teacher walk out soon.

Oklahoma, a red state run by "fiscal conservatives", have mismanaged the budget so badly they had to cut the school week to 4 days.

While I see your point, Detroit and Flint were run into the ground by Democrats. Corruption has no political affiliation, it's everywhere.
A lot of it was unions, over-priced labor + poor quality destroying the auto industry, but, as a liberal, I do basically agree w/ you

Sorry, my first reply sounded snide and rude, man. Can we still be friends? :(
Or, maybe, the holy doctrine of shareholder supremacy driving companies to seek higher profits or risk takeover? + NAFTA = Overseas Jobs
That's just my theory though. I've done very little research on it. My family is just from Michigan.
I think that's where it's at now. I think the unions started the push to move jobs beyond the borders of the US due to stupid wage demands
Oregon recently disclosed the distributions of the first year of pot taxes. Our schools got 40%, equaling $34 million.

nope. That just makes too much sense.

It would be surprising indeed if they weren't playing the same shell game with weed money.

Hopefully Nevada turns out like that. Our schools need it

I'm a manager at weed shop in Oregon. I think a lot of growers, producers and shops will be going out of business this year. 1/2

BearToof
On the opposite spectrum, big pharma can easily monopolize on marijuana and accessory products so I imagine once current patents turn that..
Pharma coops might change their tune about marijuana.
PurplePrinny
don't they test for multiple drugs in those kits? Sure marijuana might not need be tested for, but meth and coke and such should still be.
CC2332
They also have just marijuana tests. Was a huge thing in high school as nobody was doing the "harder" drugs. Just another form of control.

Imo get rid of it. My employer shouldn't have the right to know what I do in my free time as long as it doesn't impact my work.

In Canada that's exactly how it is.

I agree with you but it is a shit logic. That argument could be used for crack or meth.
Not really because those do a real tangible harm to people that outweighs any possible medicinal benefits. Marijuana has value in other area
If the government sold crack it could use the money from it. I never said it didn't have medical value, or made allusions to harm.
But that's my argument...and you said that logic....nevermind lol this is retarded
TanithRosenbaum
Actually that would be a good thing. Look at Portugal. They still go after drug lords, but users and users/dealers get treatment. Works well

lulurafa
...so?
SpruceCaboose
I disagree, as crack/meth addicts appear to run an incredibly higher chance of actually burdening society as "zombies". 1/2
Thing is that keeping the drug entirely illegal does nothing to curb that whatsoever. Decriminalising it, however, does. See Portugal.
They're still illegal though, no? We're talking about wholesale legalization of a particular substance.
I do not care for weed personally, but I've known an enormous number of capable coworkers who do. Some cocaine as well, but no crack or meth
I am pro weed legalization. I just hate that arguement.
brrrackobama
It could, and should. Prohibition does nothing to stop drug use and has tons of negative effects. Drug laws make things worse, not better.
Legalize meth?
There is a difference between decriminalising and legalising, and / or regulating stuff. Go read up on Portugal and how their decisions 1/?
Yes, actually. It's difficult to discuss in 140 chars, but drug laws drastically increase harm to society and do not stop drug use at all.

And this is why earmarking "the money from X will specificly go to Y" is always bullshit.
I'd be a lot happier paying taxes if they had percentage sliders for where your money goes. Like Humble Bundle, but for infrastructure.
As great as that would feel on your end, it would be god-awful on a national scale. ;)
Probably, unless everyone paid basic minimums for education and infrastructure. I figure the balance of red/blue would even out the rest.
Mostly I just want to see where my money is going, and have them be able to demonstrate that.
smpat04
And then the regulations will produce less than expected so the schools will be less funded than they would have otherwise been.

I think when Georgia did the lottery a while back they used it to create a new scholarship fund which was cool. Not sure what happened since
Arkansas does that with lottery precisely b/c we didn't want what happened in Texas to recur here. Also court ruled K12 funding top priority
I think it's still around, I think you have to suck the board of regents dick for 2 yrs with a 4.0 and still give occasional handies
to qualify now tho. That's what I herd....
Yep, that's exactly how California does it. At least 3 tax increases in last 15 yrs for "education", but actually this bait & switch scheme.
Followed closely by tax increases to exclusively fund road improvements, which then get that exact amount poured back into the general fund.
malikcarr
Ripping taxpayers off is the truly bipartisan issue everyone can support.

Buy a lottery ticket, almost definitely lose. Buy weed, win every time.
The lottery messes with my life. I stand behind gambling degenerates at the register who are scratching lotto tix, holding up the line.
It’s what I’ve heard called, the “poor man’s tax”. Not to mention winning it about ruins the life of the recipient from my understanding.
Not that it’s the lotto’s fault on that end, but still, I always find that to be fascinating.
One could actually argue that's the education systems' fault for not teaching wealth management... :)
Yeah, although, it’d be tough to prepare anyone (or even worthwhile) for going from 50k/yr to instant 500m. But yeah, basic edu would help
AlwaysandEventuallyHannah
But poor people already have taxes designed specifically to target them. I think they're called "taxes"

Unpopular opinion - people should pay taxes not corporations. Eliminate corporate taxes, hike taxes on the rich and capital gains.
Have to reverse that recent supreme Court decision that decided corp. were considered "people" for political purposes then. Can't be both
If you're talking about Citizens United, you didn't read it because it explicitly calls out that it is not based on corporate personhood.
Source: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/09pdf/08-205.pdf
XnFM
I'd just form a Corp to own my assets and pay myself only whar I need. Maintain 0 liquid assets to only pay taxes on what I spend.
There are many problems with the way corps are treated legally that can't be solved unless their all handled together.
Whoops, they're, not their.
upvoteforwhat
Why shouldn't corporations pay taxes? I'm down with the corporate tax rate being lower but if you operate in the US you should pay taxes.
Because corporations aren't people - they're just a group of people. You should tax that group of people as individuals to their capacity.
rando84
The argument is that all corporate income is taxed when it's paid as salaries & dividends, so it's double taxed. LLC's, small businesses 1/2
& S-corps get pass through taxation; taxes are only paid at the owner/shareholder level. A lower C-corp tax rate makes sense, but not 0. /2

Just like with allowing casinos in the state. “Fuck getting state revenue, we have good Christian morals”... FML
itsybitsyspider
Except it won't help much. They said the lottery would help with the school funding, and we're still in deep shit.

Yeah, instead they claim they have a "pot epidemic" and along with Nebraska, have tried suing Colorado.

If you believe that it'll be a plus for the school depatment, you are naive.

I'm pro legalization. But come on guys, we trust politicians as long as they say things we like?
Poltergeist94
So is the fact that marijuana profits are going toward education WHY the government is fighting it's legalization?
ProfessorDumbass
They need stupid people to be prisoners or soldiers
floatationman
No, it's due to decades of sunk cost of a drug war + increasingly heavy lobbying from the private prison industry. Jailing potheads = $$$

I second that. I stopped watching local news, too. I love my home, but gatdamn our legislators are worthless.
itsybitsyspider
Except it's not. Do you not remember what happened when they said the same thing about the lottery? Schools STILL ended up fucked.
itsybitsyspider
They pretty much went "Yeah, we'll redistribute it! Here's a few pennies."
thebluestthingsonearth
Thats because most of the money didn't even go to the schools.

After legalizing, we need to get companies to stop testing for it, since it’s legal and all.
SmolTenk
Alcohol is legal too....
MistressLyda
In most jobs, yeah. Pilots, surgeons and so on? Maybe not.
geiokami
It could impair your job so they have every right to test for it.
thisiskissel
Not talking same day use. You can lose your job if it’s in your system 3months after use. But you can be a functioning alcoholic and be ok.
Ifyourenotfirstyourelast
They’ll test for it until there’s a way to test when you were last high. Unlike alcohol, you can fail a drug test for pot if it’s been days.
Ifyourenotfirstyourelast
In the event of an accident they’d have a sobriety test performed by a doctor, and you’d still fail if you got high a few days ago

This would be great for Oklahoma because they had to shorten their school week to four days due to lack of funding.

They also have just marijuana tests. Was a huge thing in high school as nobody was doing the "harder" drugs. Just another form of control.

Not really because those do a real tangible harm to people that outweighs any possible medicinal benefits. Marijuana has value in other area

I disagree, as crack/meth addicts appear to run an incredibly higher chance of actually burdening society as "zombies". 1/2

Thing is that keeping the drug entirely illegal does nothing to curb that whatsoever. Decriminalising it, however, does. See Portugal.
SpruceCaboose
They're still illegal though, no? We're talking about wholesale legalization of a particular substance.

As great as that would feel on your end, it would be god-awful on a national scale. ;)

Probably, unless everyone paid basic minimums for education and infrastructure. I figure the balance of red/blue would even out the rest.

It’s what I’ve heard called, the “poor man’s tax”. Not to mention winning it about ruins the life of the recipient from my understanding.
BearToof
Not that it’s the lotto’s fault on that end, but still, I always find that to be fascinating.
TanithRosenbaum
One could actually argue that's the education systems' fault for not teaching wealth management... :)
BearToof
Yeah, although, it’d be tough to prepare anyone (or even worthwhile) for going from 50k/yr to instant 500m. But yeah, basic edu would help

Why shouldn't corporations pay taxes? I'm down with the corporate tax rate being lower but if you operate in the US you should pay taxes.

Because corporations aren't people - they're just a group of people. You should tax that group of people as individuals to their capacity.

The argument is that all corporate income is taxed when it's paid as salaries & dividends, so it's double taxed. LLC's, small businesses 1/2
