Not me, not mine, just sharing the research of Amy Beth Berry, follow along on other social media.
Looks like it is recent and ongoing, not published yet.
In the comedy circles, many have publicly stated that the Austin scene is washed, full of hacks, after Joseph Rogans politically motivated relocation to the city.
SomeGeek75ygh
Which clubs, where, and when? I see 4 club names out of 7 or 8 places she's at. I have an urge to go to these open mic nights, call these assholes out and humiliate them in public.
sirbartonslady
How does one "peer review" a person's notes about 10 comedians' skits? Peer review is not a buzzword you get to throw around to make your shit seem more valid -- it's a scientific process. And I don't think you peer review a person's opinions about comedy topics, especially with such a small sample size.
Turbogoat
Data collected from selected open mic nights will give you data that's less about the male psyche in general, and more about what n00b, amateur, wannabe comics think might get a laugh from their audience. It's not astounding that they come up with hack routines, frat-boy/bro type themes a lot of the time.
youre31andacompletefailure
I learnt about the Austin comedy scene from Stavros Halkias when he put Jordan Jensen in her place on his podcast after she started parroting the same sort of shit Joe Rogan spews on his sets.
OmarAlHadeen
I hope the results adjusted for how often she saw the same comic from a previous mic do variations on their previous set.
Hukkie
So why those 10 out of 35. And the 1-5 women performing, out of how many people in total performing? I have seen plenty of women perform stand-up and masturbation/sex is one of the most common topics to joke about.
All of the things mentioned are more or less irrelevant until we have all the data, and a way to compare against the topics female performers make jokes about.
Presenting it in this way does nothing but make me wonder how cherrypicked and/or misrepresented the information is.
trythebleucheese
I assumed because she performed at the other ones. Hard to take notes as an audience member and performer, I guess?
Hukkie
Then she should have said that she took notes at 10 and not mentioned the 35 total because they are not relevant. Mentioning 35 when she only gathered data on 10 just sounds like a way to inflate the numbers to make your conclusions sound more convincing.
There is not a single proven point, or anything that could be considered to be of substance.
trythebleucheese
Who are you telling? Me or the comedienne? I just gave my guess, and now I'm being downvoted for it. So yeah, you really stuck it to me!
Hukkie
I did not downvote you, and I do not think you should be for merely making a guess and asking questions. What I wrote was not an attempt to stick it to you, because nothing you wrote seemed to warrant it.
Quite the opposite, so I upvoted you.
trythebleucheese
I didn't say you did. Just don't understand your response like you were trying to tell me all about it, when I'm not conedienne

I lived in Austin Texas from 2003-2018. The comedy scene was AMAZING... and then Joe Rogan comes along and just utterly, UTTERLY destroyed everything about it.
In the past decade, Austin has gone from "California culture at Texas prices" to "Texas culture at California prices."

Big fonts for main points, smaller text for additional info.
In the gaming forum I chat in, there’s people who will post “feedback” to the developers but are clearly too lazy to write it themselves because it’s all done using college-like thesis writing to overly explain why a particular thing in the game is not good and needs to be changed. The only thing that’d put that much thought and such into something that could be summarized in more simple text/short paragraph is AI.
It’s also set up..

This data is meaningless unless it's compared to a sample of women for comparison to show there is a gendered difference and 10 comics in Austin TX is hardly statistically significant

It's science that they're more insecure. This article summarizes it well. Homophobia becomes funnier after an insecure man's masculinity is challenged. Secure men actually found homophobia less funny after having their masculinity challenged. Security breeds empathy. If you are secure with your self, noting a similarity breeds connection. When you are not secure with your self, comparison sparks a reflex to create distance.

Clockworkdancerobot
Given the context, it seems like they are miming and pretending to be gay as a joke, usually using really shitty stereotypes.
justanothergeek
Men using jokes about being flamboyant to throw a lamp shade on a homophobic joke because they are afraid of being seen as anything other than a staunch heterosexual. That's my take on it.

glovelyday
GigiDundas
Well you see one gay here is a 90s gay which meant bad in a particular way that the word bad just didn't convey, yes it was inappropriate and offensive but it was also just how we talked then, even a lot of gay people called stuff gay some of us have learned better since then and some of us have not. Have a gay day.
mikeatike
Your mistake is going to anything in Texas. Austin being the "liburl city" of Texas means it is only slightly less bigoted than the rest of the state.
hellfirerains
A lot of these are word salad meant to evoke a certain reaction. And a lot of her observations are very subjective without any clear definitions. What defines a transphobic joke? Is it a joke that would offend a trans person, or a joke that offended her? It's like the videos of the guy going around dressed in a traditional Mexican outfit. He asks a bunch of white people if it is offensive, and they say "of course". Then he asks a bunch of Mexican's and they love it. She looks like she would
DonIsMe
Much like Chappelle took a ton of misguided heat for being transphobic. With 100% certainty those who were so "outraged" that they never actually saw the video. He was supportive. So sick of this "woke" crap.
hellfirerains

Fluffy314
Yeah. Those notes look super biased and unclear. I could probably take similar notes for "jokes make it to Imgur's front page" or "a gay comedian with a queer audience" and they'd look just as bad (if not worse).
For example, I have zero doubts that the "pedofilia" jokes were making fun of the Epstein situation.
hellfirerains
The things that could be written about imgur would far overshadow what notes she wrote down
thevoiddancer
#6 While I applaud the autism this required, I gotta say those stats are shoddy as fuck. The quoted one, for example. It looks like the claim is "at 6/10 there were at least one joke that had women as a topic". We don't know the frequency. We don't know the similar stat on men. This datum is useless. Peer reviewed? What, they showed it to their parent, or? My autism demands better data.
oyskin
If she makes a set about this it might be the first female stand up comedian to make one without the focus being her body and sexlife.
blaghart
90% of all comedy at any kind of stand up is about the comedian's body and sexlife. Hell it jumps to 99% if you broaden that to "the comedian" and "their life", that's literally the foundation of observational humor

I mean, it's _austin_ in the 2020s. Tech(fash) hub.
Imalwaysready
It used to be so nice before the Musks and Rogans and asshole tech bros started moving here in droves and killing the very things they claimed drew them to this place.
It pains me to see it losing its weird, its fierce independent streak, its artistic quirkiness, its pride and diversity, and so much more over the last decade or so. So much good is being lost and squeezed out just so we can build another monotone 5-story condo complex or over-priced martini bar.
Imalwaysready
I’m an Austinite and was in the comedy scene many, many years ago. And I was close enough at the time to just walk to the old Cap City Comedy location until it closed in 2020 due to the pandemic. Rogan bought it and moved it to a better location, but I haven’t gone once because I like old Austin and detest Rogan’s perverted version of this town. I’ve had some friends go—both to watch and to perform—but they said while it is cosmetically nicer, something about it always makes their skin crawl.
voidshouting
I've listened to 1000 comedy albums released between 1980 and 2010, you know what they all have in common? Gay jokes. Beating off. Dressing up in women's clothes. Comedy jokes about the minority groups to say 'we are all together'. Carlin, Izzard, Hicks, Geraldo, Lewis Black, Ron Funches, Kyle Kinane, Eddie Murphy, Richard fucking pryor. most jokes are making fun of the fact that you accept the idea but don't want it for yourself. This was stupid post, women discovers water is wet. Move on.

oh no, im using my current social lense to dictate the rights and norms 40 years ago. I will never enjoy anything and anything older than 5 years will be forever tainted. I fail to understand how words change through time and meaning, with the fword being a prime example. Comedy is meant to be provocative and shocking and poke at the norms...and ya know also close the door on eddie murphy for apologizing and saying that bit is cringe now. Ya fuck growth, make sure ppl aren't allowed to change
voidshouting
kathleen madigan, Taylor Tomlinson 100% jokes about gay and beating off, Judy Gold, and for about 20 years Lisa Lamponelli, before you say I didn't rattle off female stand up names.
KerryCoder
If you're using 1980-2005 as part of your sample size, of course you're going to find homophobia, transphobia, racism... the point is, comedy *doesn't have to be like that.*
voidshouting
Ron Funches? Kyle Kinane? They both started comedy after 2005 my friend. They also joke about religion. They joke about ppl blowing themselves up in the middle east. They joke about cat ppl an dog ppl. It's almost as if...nothing is or should be off limits even from the staunchest of limits. Ron funches jokes about autism and his autistic son. Gabrial iglasies about his step-son. If it wasn't like that it wouldn't be funny. Or ya know, take a step back and look at yourself a bit.

Rivians seem nice. I'm nowhere near needing (or affording) a new car, so I haven't looked into them too closely, but I hope they are a good company making a good product and not secretly supremecists or anything (like you-know-who).
Being a tech-heavy town, Austin was an early adopter of electric cars—many of them Teslas. Now I see a dozen a day with bumper stickers reading things like “I identify as a Rivian” or “I bought this before I knew what he was” or “make my car less embarrassing again”

dohcohv
Or buy an EV that costs $7 to charge and will go over 200 miles.
Jamesstin
Does it really cost that much?
dohcohv
It varies based on what EV and your electricity rate. I have a Bolt and it costs about 0.12/KWh with a 66KWh battery and it gets about 4mi/KWh. I never let it get to zero so let's just go by miles. 200mi divided by 4mi/KWh is 50KWh. Times that by .12/KWh is $6 to charge it to go 200mi. There are charging losses, but it's not much.
Compare it to my Altima that gets 35mpg. 200mi divided by 35mpg and you get 5.7gallons. 5.7gal times 4.80/gal which is the cheapest here and it's $27
dohcohv
Now let's say you want a truck, like a Rivian, or a lightning. Probably around 2.2 or 2.5 miles per KWh, which would be about $11 or $10 to go 200miles. My gas truck would cost $56.
However, if you do public fast charging, expect to pay 3-4 times as much, which makes it more expensive than charging at home.
I charge at work a lot so it's even cheaper for me. The chargers are slower so it costs the company like $1.50/day if I charge at work.
ropetopus
Depends on a lot of things, but yes it’s much cheaper than gas if you’re charging at home. National averages: $4.40/gal; $0.13/kWh
Around 60kWh on average to go 200mi, so $7.80 (probably a touch more because charging isn’t perfectly efficient)
You’d need a car to get 118MPG to go 200mi for $7.80
dohcohv
Not to mention that 200mi for 60KWh is relatively inefficient for EV cars, most EV SUVs are rated around that(id.4, mustang mach-e, equinox). So yeah, try getting an SUV that gets 118MPG.
dantetsaronis
From zero ("running on fumes"), $16.12 at the cheaper rapid chargers and double that at the expensive ones, and less if you slow-charge at home which also depends a lot on your residential electricity charging rates (which provider, state, and rate plan you're on if you have access to multiple). Many states and utilities have subsidized dedicated charging rates for EVs or other home battery solutions if you opt to let them pause charging during peak demand, e.g. a few hot afternoons per year.
dantetsaronis
To clarify, that's in US dollars for a 1.8 short-ton (US) vehicle at the Level 1 rapid chargers I typically charge at, that bill customers by kilowatt-hour (power consumed) rather than time. Some of them charge by time connected to the charger instead, or in addition. That nets ~220 miles during normal temperatures, but less if the vehicle has a heavy load, drives fast on interstate highways with more air drag, or requires more acceleration with very little regen from braking (up a mountain?).
JarJarDrinks
Amy Schumer and Lisa Lampenelli made whole careers talking about sex.
Jamesstin
Talking about sex is a bit different than talking shit about queer people. Lamp talked about her own sexual experiences and amy doesn't talk about sex as much as is claimed. She just tends to enrage men because they don't think shes attractive but they'd totally fuck her yet she probably would turn them down but somehow they still believe they're more attractive on a 10 scale. Shit just absolutely cooks their brain
shitheadtookmyname
Also what no-taste-having fuck says lampinelli isn't funny? That's like saying Taylor Tomlinson isn't funny. Any room they're in, they're almost invariably going to be the objectively funniest person there.
GimcrackGewgaw
Amy Schumer's comedy mostly misses me, but Lisa Lampspaghetti usually makes me laugh. Sex is fraught and that makes it comedy fodder!
Nathanyel
I assume the jokes about "masturbation" were along the lines of "thank god I didn't have to masturbate on my own that night", or otherwise at the expense of self-pleasure. At best, self-deprecating that they did masturbate.

loma45
I also though that Trainwreck with her and Bill Hader was legitimately funny. She got a lot of undeserved hate IMO
Moriarte
Schumer would steal jokes from other comics and pass them off as her own and perform them in ways that made them unfunny.
She's shit as a comic and as a thief.
KawhiLeonardIsSenpai
Schumer had some killer jokes when she performed at The Roast of Charlie Sheen.
sombradeamigo1742
Amy Schumer was never the funniest person ever, but the hate ive seen for her on the internet is insane for no reason.
Imalwaysready
The level of hate is over the top, but there have been multiple accusations of joke stealing (many coincidental, I’m sure, but some…seem more likely?), she has also alienated a number of comics (like Tig Nataro who was not just a collaborator, but roommate, but is clearly not a friend any longer), faced claims of diva-like behavior behind the scenes, and accused of racism, Islamophobia, and being a fake feminist—from critics, but also former collaborators and employees.
I think a lot of it has>
shitheadtookmyname
As I got older I've come to view "she acts like a diva" like bullshit. Some one wanted to hurt a famous female and started stories like this. Like I remember with Constance Wu all these stories about her letting her pet rabbit fuck up hotel rooms. Act like a bitch, etc. Then years later find out just about the same time. Her boss on the show has s been constantly sexually harassing her and she was under contract so couldn't leave the show. Boss was trying to discredit her via fake news
Imalwaysready
been overblown—and certainly a good portion of it was driven by misogynists—or the result of someone young still trying to find their footing & making some missteps, mixed with someone thrown into more fame than expected rather suddenly & not always handling it well, but it wasn’t all totally out of nowhere. There were seeds of controversy that had some validity as well. Hell, if you piss Tig Nataro off so much she doesn’t want to talk to you anymore…then you’ve gone and done *sonething* wrong.
cuzitsthere
This seems to happen EVERY DAMN TIME a non-white-man faces legit criticism. The bigots come out of the woodwork and make the whole thing seem overblown and... Well, bigoted. Amy Schumer now has a decent crowd of apologists because the misogynists added their filth to every negative comment about her and the story became all about her over-use of vagina jokes (cuz we've never heard men make dick jokes, right?)
herpb4uderp
Why djd she attend 35 but only take notes at ten? Did she choose those ten for some reason in particular? Wouldnt taking notes at all 35 have provided better evidence for her small sample survey? Research seems like maybe too strong of a word here
ButtblasterMcAssmaster
I would absolutely be interested in statistics about the topics of comedy shows, but this has to be one of the worst ways to present information I've ever seen. I'm struggling to parse any kind of actual data from this post.

Probably because she noticed the pattern after a while and decided to start taking notes.

Same I had no idea what was going on. I’m also puzzled why she only took notes on ten of them. Probably because she was also performing or networking or just hanging out at the others, but it for sure leaves her open to “did you just cherry-pick the sample to fit your narrative” questions

Thanks for the question! Observational research is done by recording data metrics, writing down. She attended 35, many as a comedian herself, and began writing down patterns and key phrases in 10 of them as an audience member. Quantizing this is a mixed methods approach of categorizing qualifiable characteristics into quantifiable numbers. Versus speculative investigation which can be done from a couch, in a comment section. Feel free to critique and peer review your opinion

My partner is a research sociologist, and this isn't proper content analysis. This isn't even semi-quantitative (no, tally marks for some categories don't make it so), and it isn't even doing a good job at being qualitative data. You also lack an understanding of what peer review is about. Peer review is the process of showing your work to other experts in the field for formal evaluation to determine acceptance for publication. Show us the detailed reviewer comments and editorial notes.
shitheadtookmyname
What does your partner's job have to do with you? My wife is a surgeon. I'm not gonna use that as support for my own claims about biology
Jathine
Do you not pay attention to your partner says about their work? My PhD is in biochemistry and hers is in sociology. We read each others papers before we submit them for publication. I help her with statistics and coding when she needs it. You can learn a lot about a field over a couple of decades in a situation like that.

I kinda bet that a comedian slated to perform at an open mic night caught actively taking notes about other comedians' jokes is probably a recipe for an ass kicking. Slightly safer as a pure audience member.
sombradeamigo1742
Literally nothing you've said answers their question.
CurbYourClassWar
Wow, that’s a lot of ten-dollar words just to dodge the question. Why only analyze 10 out of 35 shows, and why even mention 35 if not to make it sound more representative than it is? This is just jargon overload that says less the longer it goes. And the irony? You knock “couch speculation” while doing the same thing in “fancier” language to try to come off as an authority. This isn’t fuckin science or actual research. It comes off as disingenuous and unhinged. Great job helping the bad guys.
NTSBstoleMyGirl

"helping the bad guys"
Who even is your enemy here?
This is how you can tell you're not asking questions in good faith, because instead of asking for further clarification or new questions altogether, you attack and accuse them. Even call them the "bad guys". Unhinged behavior.
herpb4uderp
Has anyone ever told you that you sound exactly like an llm? Also you didnt answer my question. Why did she choose those ten of 35? Was there something significant about those ten? Did the other 25 just not match her thesis? Also Wtf does "peer review your opinion mean" you are just making things up to sound academic.
FlyingButtPliers
I could be wrong, but it sounded like she only took notes when she wasn't also performing? If we assume that "in 10 of them as an audience member" might be the reason because otherwise "she was a comedian herself" and probably not able to take notes as well?
somebackup
you are correct and it is a weird deflection. even though I think what she is saying is observably true, choosing to do it at 10 is weird. maybe it was like a "i noticed a trend so now i started paying attention", but then don't say 35.
Rogerwilco1974
Has anyone told you what YOU sound like? I'm sure you can work it out. I'm the meantime, what if she said only 10 because the other 25 weren't full of gay & women jokes? That's ok, is it? Only 30% of the performers were demonstrably sexist/homophobic/transphobic, so that's ok? What's your point, here?
herpb4uderp
I just think people shouldnt misrepresent the truth for clicks ya bonehead. The truth is enough to establish the point. Theres no need to manipulate it for exagerated effect.
Rogerwilco1974
You're assuming that there must have been some kind of deception, just because she didn't watch and take notes at every single show, she must be hiding something?
Bobbobbobobbananafanafobob
A woman did math/science on the internet and is now being bombarded by people asking questions that don't matter because it's a comedy exercise on social media and not a journal of psychology.
Kind of proving the point about insecure men.
syoebiusprime
Because they came after performing at 25 events. Then she attended 10 as an audience member and not a performer. The significance is that those 10 are qualitatively and quantitatively measured compared to the anecdotal evidence of participating as a performer in the first 25.
It means you are invited to do your own research on this topic and have your conclusions rigorously reviewed by others.
All if this is in their response.
None of it is made up.
This is basic academic methodology.
shitheadtookmyname
But have you accounted for the fact that men here on imgur and reddit think female researchers never consider things like cOrRelLaTioN IS noT cAuSAtIoN and SAmplE sIzE toO smALl
It's like the#1 response to everything they don't like
Salticido
I don't see where your first paragraph is represented in their comment or in the original post. I also assume that's what happened (like maybe after the first 25, she felt she saw patterns and thought of the idea to start taking notes), but it's not stated anywhere that I can see.
ElleW1988
You did not post anything resembling academic methodology. You posted screenshots of a comedians observations that they are passing off as quasi-academic research. But this is not how research on this subject happens in practice. Using words like qualitative and quantitative does not make it true. You would need to compare samples across multiple mediums, diversity of venue (open mic vs Netflix) longer periods of time, more analysis and actual breakdown of time spent on jokes, I could go on...
WarmMachineDD7
1) There are different kinds of studies, not all of them are as exhaustive as others. 2) More involved studies require actual funding to be able to attend more shows and gather more data, but it's highly doubtful you'd get funding for this kind of research (this is all on the back of one single person, which probably started on a whim). 3) You're also not showing any kind of contradictory research on your part, so I'm more inclined to believe this over the nothing you are providing.
