Loans/mortgages? Seriously? Yeah, how dare companies lend consenting customers money and expect those customers to pay it back.
Sinus23
True however banks need to be regulated regarding their lending. Just the day before the economic crash in Iceland Tellers were ordered 1/?
among other employees to phone people selling them loans, as in getting people to take out a loan. Even though they knew very well that 2/?
the credit vs debit was already extremely high on the credit side and a crash was inevitable. The free market can and is being exploited3/3
True, that is something this country needs to fix. But stealing from banks and screwing over people's investment accounts isn't the answer.
Agreed.
StarrryNight
Won't somebody think of the multi-billionaires!!!!!! *weeps uncontrollably*
So it's okay to steal from people and screw over the economy as long as the people being stolen from have deep pockets?
Just completely ignore that those banks are just the name in the front of your retirement account, so screwing yourself
The top steal from us so why wouldn't it be ok to go in the other direction.
Before I answer that I need to know what your definition of the top "stealing from us" is.
Well my definition of that would be multi-billionaires paying workers who made them their billions minimum wages.
There's a deeper resentment of the entire system going on. Some people would like to save the city by destroying it.
Well some people are idiots.

Unplug it and run out. As a IT consultant i had to not laugh. I was like wow. Granted they did bsckup to an SFTP, but that answer lol wtf
Yup, and multiple, hardened restore procedures too, ones that are demonstrated regularly to a bank's auditors to meet regulations.
Tsamane
I want to add on to this party pooping parade. If hackers managed to delete loans/debts of people the world economy would collapse
It wouldn’t, and they couldn’t. As someone that works in Banking IT...I have a little inside info on this one.
MaverickEsq
Hi, money-type banker here, if they managed to wipe the record everything totes would collapse. Starting with the banks and their investees
That said, they couldn't do it, physically unpossible. So I agree with you there, backups, physical copies etc
And mass unemployment will soon follow, it would put everyone in a worse position
Coinboy
Guide us through the downfall.
Literally the end of fight club.
SearchingForUnderstanding
Not to mention how this would be actually catastrophic for everyone. It’s all connected peeps. You don’t live in a vacuum.
A lot of banks (certainly in the UK and Europe) cannot get a banking licence if they cannot prove they can recover from a hacking attack.
It's the case in the U.S., too. A bank or other institution will repeatedly flunk audits if they can't demonstrate that capability.
Are all their servers in Britain? See, I have this golden eye connected to a satellite that...
kittykat
So the hackers will need to attack multiple sites simultaneously.
No, because the DR site is not live until called into operation. Plus, the IP addresses will be different.
Plus, any DDOS attempt or other exploit will already have been blacklisted.

And?
SexualChocolates
I’m guessing almost everyone’s pension or 401k invests in mortgaged backed securities, so you’d lose all or most retirement savings
cranialpleasure
Bold of you to assume I get paid enough to save for retirement
SexualChocolates
Well doesn’t matter how much you get paid if you have a pension
ChadtheUltimatePirate
Tell that to the stock market
PaintYourWagon
"I lost my job, my 401K, and can no longer afford to buy a loaf of bread due to inflation but I dont have loans which is pretty sweet..."
ohwhocaresanyway
It would destroy the entire economy.
awesmond
Seems to be happening anyway. We outta learn how to garden soon.
purgethefilthyheretics
Have you looked at Europe's economy recently?
Decoyape11
It’s going to do that either way. Well war will probably happen again.
Thugnificient
We will battle in the greatest war for our Wells yet!!!!!
Decoyape11
Water is a thing.
DarthFutuza
California took our water, take it back!
Lizaderp
Dude have you looked around?
EarthDragon2189
Loans/mortgages? Seriously? Yeah, how dare companies lend consenting customers money and expect those customers to pay it back.
Sinus23
True however banks need to be regulated regarding their lending. Just the day before the economic crash in Iceland Tellers were ordered 1/?
Sinus23
among other employees to phone people selling them loans, as in getting people to take out a loan. Even though they knew very well that 2/?
Sinus23
the credit vs debit was already extremely high on the credit side and a crash was inevitable. The free market can and is being exploited3/3
EarthDragon2189
True, that is something this country needs to fix. But stealing from banks and screwing over people's investment accounts isn't the answer.
Sinus23
Agreed.
StarrryNight
Won't somebody think of the multi-billionaires!!!!!! *weeps uncontrollably*
EarthDragon2189
So it's okay to steal from people and screw over the economy as long as the people being stolen from have deep pockets?
JayceHall
Just completely ignore that those banks are just the name in the front of your retirement account, so screwing yourself
StarrryNight
The top steal from us so why wouldn't it be ok to go in the other direction.
EarthDragon2189
Before I answer that I need to know what your definition of the top "stealing from us" is.
StarrryNight
Well my definition of that would be multi-billionaires paying workers who made them their billions minimum wages.
Sprixxen
There's a deeper resentment of the entire system going on. Some people would like to save the city by destroying it.
EarthDragon2189
Well some people are idiots.
AScottishGuyWhoWantsIndy
Hate to be the party pooper, but that’s why there’s such things as backups taken daily and why there is disaster recovery.
nein999
Not according to the new BladeRunner movie
uploaderzero
And when it comes to financial info, there's more $ sunk into those backups, quick restore procedures, etc. than probably any other data.
bobziIIa
They use block chain, while simultaneously down play cryptocurrency.
johnnydarkside
Also, just think of how fucked the economy would be if all student/mortgage/CC debt was just erased.
ohhhDrew
If only the hackers could figure out how to get a malicious worm into the backups...
nextgenpants
I imagine they use tape backups too.
astrangehop
Some weird part of the veteran's retirement program was done in a cave with fucking typewriters until the early 2000s
AScottishGuyWhoWantsIndy
Punched card actually.
Lizaderp
Go full on Fight Club. Blow up the credit bureaus
UglyHorribleGrouchyOldMan
You are not understanding the term "backup". Offsite backups make the whole ending of the movie quite pointless.
Lizaderp
Blow those up too. We can solve all our problems with blowing shit up
v01dstar
Data like that? Sooo many backups, in sooo many nuke-proof bunkers, under sooo many mountains. Good luck.
Lizaderp
Bring on the volcanos. Melt everything!
UglyHorribleGrouchyOldMan
Yeah, you're not even going to find the locations of most of it. You're espousing a teenager's concept of the system.
BayazTheBenevolent
Sure they do. The illusion that banks are perfect and impenetrable is arguably what made this shit work for so long.
AScottishGuyWhoWantsIndy
Hate to pop that ok’ balloon bud - but see previous comments about banking licenses.
AScottishGuyWhoWantsIndy
Ol’
AScottishGuyWhoWantsIndy
If you can’t prove you have an effective response to a cyber attach, you ain’t getting a license. No license, no bank.
AScottishGuyWhoWantsIndy
*attack - flipping spellcheck
GambitLW
Backups ins duplicate, with offsite storage.
theglimmeringwarlock
Best one i had. CIO of a hospital was like, did you set up my seagate drive? I was like um, what is it. He's like its an external hard
theglimmeringwarlock
Drive. I was like, wait you're backing up to that, wheres your DR location? He's like its this, if the building starts on fire, i can
theglimmeringwarlock
Unplug it and run out. As a IT consultant i had to not laugh. I was like wow. Granted they did bsckup to an SFTP, but that answer lol wtf
uploaderzero
Yup, and multiple, hardened restore procedures too, ones that are demonstrated regularly to a bank's auditors to meet regulations.
Tsamane
I want to add on to this party pooping parade. If hackers managed to delete loans/debts of people the world economy would collapse
AScottishGuyWhoWantsIndy
It wouldn’t, and they couldn’t. As someone that works in Banking IT...I have a little inside info on this one.
MaverickEsq
Hi, money-type banker here, if they managed to wipe the record everything totes would collapse. Starting with the banks and their investees
MaverickEsq
That said, they couldn't do it, physically unpossible. So I agree with you there, backups, physical copies etc
Tsamane
And mass unemployment will soon follow, it would put everyone in a worse position
Coinboy
Guide us through the downfall.
astrangehop
Literally the end of fight club.
SearchingForUnderstanding
Not to mention how this would be actually catastrophic for everyone. It’s all connected peeps. You don’t live in a vacuum.
AScottishGuyWhoWantsIndy
A lot of banks (certainly in the UK and Europe) cannot get a banking licence if they cannot prove they can recover from a hacking attack.
uploaderzero
It's the case in the U.S., too. A bank or other institution will repeatedly flunk audits if they can't demonstrate that capability.
astrangehop
Are all their servers in Britain? See, I have this golden eye connected to a satellite that...
kittykat
So the hackers will need to attack multiple sites simultaneously.
AScottishGuyWhoWantsIndy
No, because the DR site is not live until called into operation. Plus, the IP addresses will be different.
AScottishGuyWhoWantsIndy
Plus, any DDOS attempt or other exploit will already have been blacklisted.
TheWhiteBarry
Oi mate you got a loisence for that bank?
AceLynch
Season 1 - Mr Robot.
Decoyape11
Oh fight club again. Nice.
distinctlymeh
So you are saying someone already showed them how they could do it
MissSpelledTattoo
Watching right now
EminemAnemone
I’m jealous
Asherdash
Is it available to stream anywhere? I've been wanting to watch for a while now, but especially now after seeing Queen
KittyCatMan321
i just recently finished watching the entire series for the first time. I cant WAIT for the final season!
ThatWizardCameFromTheMoon
Looked for this before commenting. Excellent show!
usernamepolice
Dude spoilers
muhvitus
Too old series, spoiler rule has expired.
truemetalman
Plus it only takes a couple episodes to realize.
usernamepolice
How old is it now?
lOwl97
It first aired in 2015. Not that old, actually
usernamepolice
Thats what i thought. Oh well man some people are just argumentative i guess. For the record iv seen it lol
greminator
Fuck yea so glad someone said this
colinzealuk
Or the book/film they copied from more than once - Fight Club
nclu
Openly inspired by Fight Club and American Psycho.
iLikeHockey
At least they were open about it. You can't use the pixies song in a show like that without anyone noticing. More of an ode, no?
blownD
I was annoyed at first until I realized fight clubs was already almost 20 years old...
meatgortex
Pixies song was 100% a forth wall nod to Fight Club.
EminemAnemone

I bet they can't do it. I bet they're not awesome enough
Yesisaidthat
Well. I'm sure they could. But then there are back ups. And back up of back ups.
FourWindBadger
You need to dare them not tell them they can't do it ! That was almost just an insult
WigglyCherry
Could also be that it is not purely internet based so EVERYONES loans etc probably wouldn't vanish. But that is just my guess
buttonguy3
They're awesome enough. They just needed the proper motivation. Like someone saying they aren't awesome enough. Which they aren't, btw.
uploaderzero
FYI, most of the "hacks" you read about in the news are people's information getting copied, not regularly-backed-up data getting changed.
buttonguy3
Oh , I know it's not like the movies.
Headshots980
Neeeeeerds
uploaderzero
You're right, they aren't. No one on Earth is "awesome" enough to get to that many backups at once.
MediocreExtremist
that is why viruses exist. with a built-in time trigger
JohnEveryDoe
Time trigger huh? Is that verified hacker lingo?
BadShiftRogue
No, it just makes sense because they're simple fucking words, you retarded monkey.
LudeJaw
MaximillionGledhill
unfortunately I doubt reverse psychology will work at this juncture since it really hasn't happened
Mechlai
Hackers can be pretty awesome. I got hacked by a blackhat and a greyhat... and the greyhat went after the blackhat and after I was 1/2
Mechlai
taught what "doxxing" was, I got to watch all of this guy's illegally run websites and his social media disappear. :)
Hrafna55
We already had a movie about it.
FredaFelcher
I’ll just leave my ssn to volunteer for firsties
Lizaderp
Hacker, this is your girlfriend, and only guys with big dicks can accomplish this. But I found that guy on Tinder so you're good
Ruyh
One year later all loans, bad credits and mortages are doubled
DougDeNasty
Emilio Estevez and Demmi Moore did something similar in 1986 (Wisdom)
ThySausagePrince
Mr. Robot was pretty accurate in that there are multiple redundant backups, with a physical paper trail archived at Iron Mountain.
Nibbets
They need to stop making their warehouses out of flamable material..
JHawke
TBF I think we have arrived at the point where if we need the paper trail... there would be so much chaos the paper trail is useless.
Aricmorrow
So a hack backed by a firebombing

Watch you all get hacked for talking shit.
Tinkrr
You know how heavily all of this is backed up? Even small businesses keep extensive paper trails. D:
Maniachasrepliedwithascornfulremark

Garouleloup
Don't jinx it ffs
PhngluiMglwnafghCthulhuRlyehWgahNaglFhtagn
Yeah all they do is hack games services and deface stupid politicians websites. Don’t have the skills to bring down Banks
Wiwwil
Working in IT in banking. Sadly cobol's annoying.
Mavericklgx
True that.. Cobol and old dusty mainframes running Tandem OS which are almost 5 decades old..Most hackers are young and oblivious to that
gloupin
Defacing a website is the equivalent of TPing someone house. It's easy, visible, and requires close to no skill.
Skathix
^ This. As a software developer who works with banks, depending on what you're looking at it can be Fort Knox. Not impossible but damn.
ImHereToExplainTheJoke
Considering how ridiculously old and slow our banking infrastructure is, I find that somewhat hard to believe. Forced obsolescence errywhere
ExplodingPotato
Nah, while it might be broken for clients, I can bet a lot that they're taking good care of their own money.
PossiblyYourMother

mroranges
A friend who works in data security at a bank says they are constantly (literally without end) being attacked in one way or another.
ICantThinkOfAU
My mate recently went into security analysis for a massive insurance firm, and yeah, basically exactly that
Wiwwil
Working on the banking it. Yeah kinda true. That's why cobolis still a thing. Safe they say.
visorian
Depending on the bank, good
mroranges
Is it? I wouldn't want my financial data compromised.
Chalybos
Indeed. There’s a difference between shooting one individual and using a carbomb to take them out, along with 50 bystanders.
