On one hand, we do kill a lot of people- not just the peaceful ones.
On the other hand, George Carlin needed a kick in the nuts for increasing the amount of cynicism and apathy in the voting public. We were on the way towards a progressive future, then he gets famous, he pushes nihilistic cynicism about how voting doesn't work, then Reagan won. And the GOP continued to win as liberals/progs/leftists stayed home and declared that it was hopeless. He's both insightful and destructive.

The shitty part is, the math just works out that way. People who don't kill generally preach peace, not killing things. Those who do kill will preach whatever, and they will not be the same person. Statistically, if all "choices" are going to happen, at least a non-zero time, we can probably assume that a killer will eventually kill a peaceful person.

I'm inclined to believe you, but at the same time, the man devoted a whole album to attacking the Reagan administration, and the Christian right were always fair game. Honestly, a Carlin filter on current events would help me process a lot of this bullshit better.

Because he's irreverent and Republicans believe that liberal culture is the dominant force in modern culture, and thus, irreverence = disdain for liberalism, even though Carlin's viewpoints come across as being strongly opposed to conservatism in any form. Also, his belief that voting is useless, which, well, you know how Republicans think about voting. His anti-voting stance is the one thing I genuinely hold against him.

I never knew him while he was alive, but the more i learn about him the more i think he was privileged enough not to have to worry about a lot of things minorities have to. he made a lot of good points, but also a bunch of points that were just calling minorities too sensitive over "things that dont matter". even though minorites are debating those things because if they dont form a strong identity for their group, then it makes it easier for horrible people to make their lives unlivable

Also re voting, I agree with you, but in mild defense the consequences of voting weren't quite so starkly defined and dire back before he put on the wooden onesie

I am not versed enough in his antivoting stance. I could Google, but it's more interesting to talk to people. I thought he generally thought voting was bullshit due to lack of actual choice. I.e. Do you vote for the fiscally conservative centrist Democrat or the fiscally conservative centrist Republican? The illusion of choice and all that. Please, lemme know :D

This is basically it. The Dem party are owned by the hoghest bidder, just like the Reps are, but the difference is that if a politician actually HAS any principles and wants to make the world a better place, they'll join the Dems.
But I agree with OP here. George is right about the problems with voting in America, but his stance is a very privileged one. Not participating in the system doesn't immunise you from the system. Just means you decided it's not worth trying to make it less shit.
