And the status quo is the US doesn't have a draft, so everyone - men and women - in the military is there of their own free will. Also wars have an effect on the entire country, not just the people fighting them, so everyone has a vested interested in discussing them.

And half tax during december, so that you can afford to give your family a great Christmas/holiday. We also get a lot of single days off. And paid sickdays. No matter how long you are sick. You don't get paid vacation. They hold back part of your salary throughout the year that you get paid back during vacations [1]. Same for "half tax" in december. You typically pay a bit more throughout the year to pay less in december [2]. You do get 3 days paid sickdays, up to 4 times a year, by law. Over that they can require you to get a doctors note and the pay be offloaded to the government. [3] You do also get back vacation days if you are sick during the vacation, just a tip.

As a Canadian, I can only imagine how absolutely awful that type of environment is to be able to learn anything effectively too. Stories like this coupled with how exorbitantly expensive higher education is in the US, I don't really wonder at all why it seems that a lot more Americans are lacking critical thinking skills and ignorant of a lot of things that just make perfect sense to me and most of my peers.

Oh for sure, it's been a gradual multi-generational defunding of public education over several decades so that the teachers now teaching don't know how lacking in education they are. Coupled with toxic nationalism and patriotism students aren't allowed to learn about all the shitty things America did in the past to black, lgbtq+, and indigenous peoples. While you aren't wrong, the fact is we have to mitigate the damage until we can change something. Dems aren't terribly interested in making the system better, but they aren't actively trying to make it worse. Only way we are likely to get to where we are able to actually vote for who we believe in is to have a rank-choice voting system. So voting for Biden is a tourniquet to slow the bleeding. Without it we will bleed out before we can address the wound.

Personally I would prefer something like STAR voting. Ranked choice is kind of a favorite to least elimination that doesn't really sit well with me, but STAR is like a ranked approval.

The benefit of a approval style is you don't take away a vote from the other candidates, and with the ranking part, you can show your preferences with points. So you can give your real preference a 5, and also toss a 4 or 5 pity approval to the two prune parties.
The two candidates with the highest approval go into an automatic run off where it'll then tally up the single vote per person.

Yeah, that's one I want to learn more about, but I would argue that most ranked choice isn't taking a vote away from anyone, it is just redistributing the votes of those who have already lost, so your vote has the same impact on the outcome even if you preferred candidate only gets like 7 votes. You still have the chance to have full participation in the final outcome. You don't have to list everyone, so if there are those you would rather not vote than vote for them, simply don't include them.

We have way too many immigrants. But they're not immigrants. If they were, I think the numbers and situation would be better. They're people who have been sold a quick ride to perm residence through a cheap diploma farm, overloading our school, housing, and job markets and now protesting the government of Canada to be allowed to overstay their learning visas. The immigration bit is an interesting one because there's layers of nuance to it that most people don't understand. Immigration numbers have been absolutely unsustainable in recent years: over 2 million people have moved here since 2022. That's 5% of the population arriving in just the past 2 years. But our aging population also supposedly needs more workers to sustain it (arguable). It's a catch 22.

Yes! Not to mention, 15% of permanent residents decide to go back to their country of origin after 20 years in Canada. They stay, get PR, then go back home because there's nowhere to live, wages don't match the cost of living, and having PR status in Canada is internationally valuable (I don't blame them). My husband moved here in 2019, and none of his education credentials are valid here. If he wants any type of career, he'll have to pay $10,000 extra for Canadian creds. Shit's fucked.

The housing crisis is not caused by immigrants. No matter how nuanced you say it is. The vast majority of immigrants establish themselves in urban areas. Apartments and condos that would have been available if the current occupants would have been able to purchase a house. It's a cycle that has been broken by greed and short term rentals.

The company I work for sent it lower level management to management classes. There were other previous lack of empathy incidents like this. This one was the last straw for me. I didn't want to work with these types of people anymore. Company went belly up and we got laid off. The next company I worked for I asked for no promotions.

That works only up to a point where the scale becomes completely unmanageable. There has to be alternative hierarchal structures as well that are highly regulated to deal with things that need to be massive in scale. National Health Care is one such area. One could argue though that that area should never be geared towards profit at all but there needs to be profit incentive for much of modern health care to have even existed so there is a possible balance. US just hasn't found it.
