But they were all deceived. For another fantasy was forged in darkness. It was not the final.

The RPG I cut my teeth on was Final Fantasy Legend II for the Game Boy. While not technically a Final Fantasy (They just renamed the SaGa games), it's still a fantastic game with absolutely phenomenal music.

Those ones in the gameboy were fantastic

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Three was probably my favorite though two definitely got more time sunk into it. One however will hold a soft spot solely for getting to chainsaw god.

I tried this on an emulator a while back and was going nuts trying to figure out what the spell "SABR" did, only to give up and google it and discover that it was bugged and did absolutely nothing

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

ah, the days before patching bugs was a thing.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I loved and hated those old game bugs. Like finding out that certain stats did absolutely nothing, or that some spells just straight up ignored restrictions. Tvtropes has a whole list of ascended bugs that were accidentally responsible for many game mechanics we take for granted today.

Should play the PSP versions they fixed alot of the issues and have alot of bonus content.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Better than "LOCK", which was supposed to decrease enemy evasion but instead raised it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You should try final fantasy renaissance for a cleaned up version of the original. Gives you extra class actions and optionally extra classes.

Pixel remaster is also really solid. No extra dungeons but personally I didn't care much for the extra dungeons.

This is the game that started my obsession with RPG’s. I bought this when it was new, and the Nintendo Power strategy guide was immensely helpful in my defeat of Chaos! Those were the days!

I loved both! games are so much complicated nowaday! i love old school game, x-com original games were so much better than the remakes. I loved all ff all the way to 9, I loved dragon warrior, I loved lufia, Star control, so many more games. I 43 and so glad I got to exprerience the vision and design of those games.. I'm also 13 y/o in the industry. cheers

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's true. Almost none of the dungeons in that game are wheelchair accessible.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

What is this ugly upscaler. Bring the crispy blocky pixelated look. Like God intended it to be.

Wow! I bet she has two of them.

Let's not be so hasty about that second line.

There are MANY remakes of the first Final Fantasy, but my heart always goes back to the original NES version, which was the first game I ever beat, and my favorite above all the remakes. White Mage is also why I entered the medical field, it is and always will be my favorite class/job.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Is this from some spin-off of 8-bit theater?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

No it's from the original.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't remember them using those sprites though? Even at the ending it's the old school black mage sprite...

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

Just because you don't remember doesn't mean I'm wrong, no matter how many sassy ellipsis you put at the end.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Ellipsis is sassy now? I was just trailing off dude...

They do a class up after they meet Bahamut. Thief actually steals his Ninja class from the future and then rues it later when his past self steals it back. I can't remember specifically how the rest of them get dropped back to their original class, which means it's time to read it again!

Apparently I need to reread too. :)

Chrono Trigger was my first RPG and will always have a place in my heart.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I mean, it is one of the best video games of all time, and easily tops my list of JRPGs. I think i own every release of the game, and routinely replay it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One of my favs

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Absolute top tier game.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not to mention the soundtrack is a modern masterpiece.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know FFXIV is an mmo, but if all you did was subscribe and play through the main story quests, it would be money well spent. Emet Selch is one of the best antagonists ever written. Fight me!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I started with 4, but 6 is my favorite!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I loved this game and Terranigma

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Definitely recommend Terranigma to anyone who can play it, great game

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

FF9 was my first. And heavily influenced my tastes in fantasy aesthetics from then on~

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

7 was my first, but 9 is easily my favourite. The aesthetics are so charming, but also the design work in general is just incredible, even when brought over into other styles (such as Dissidia or the various mobile games). Still the best airship designs in the franchise too! :D

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

FF9 played like a love letter to the prior ff games, and that's why it's my favorite of the series.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It ripped off D&D, had numerous bugs and errors, its plot decided at the end to make absolutely no sense, but in the end, a shining example of something more than the sum of its parts. In the words of my dad as he faced down the Lich in his rematch: "DON'T NUKE ME!"

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I played the absolute hell out of this game. But the first time I beat it, It was on accident.

I was preparing everything to enter the final boss room, so I thought maybe I should just do a recon first.

I opened the door… And the final battle began. I won, but I was trembling the entire time.

Yes and when you almost beat Chaos he does cure4 and heals himself all the way again. I almost called the Nintendo hint line.

I loved this game so much. I dreamt about it on the regular. I can sing several of the themes from this to this day, not having played it or heard them in 30 years.

It IS the final fantasy. Of that world. It's why the FFINOs 10 and 10-2 were so dumb. Well, one of the reasons.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

10-2 was fucking dumb

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I should feel more guilt for how much I liked that game because it was really dumb.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dumb, but dumb fun.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Regardless of your opinions on the story it has the best job system and great combat.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Maybe at Final Fantasy XXIX, I don't think they want to deal with the fallout from making Final Fantasy XXX.

Easiest solution: Stop using Roman numerals. 30 isn't a problem.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Alternate methods to write 30 with roman numerals would also all involve "XXL" so I wish them luck lol.
Unfortunately that likely means they'll just abandon adding up linearly and go straight to the next step.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At the current rate at one game every 7 years, it will only take them 98 years to get there

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I recently played 1-6 Pixel Remaster. It was so nice to enjoy these games and not have to deal with the grind. I am too old and impatient anymore to play these games as Mother Nature intended.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I started playing through these a few weeks ago, literally playing FF6 right now! It's crazy how well these games hold up even with their flaws. I didn't even finish FF7 Remake or Rebirth but fond myself wanting to replay these earlier games again.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, as much as I love the original, I couldn't bring myself to sit through severe spellcast limitations or buying 99 potions 1 at a time again. Not to mention the bugged stats and spells that didn't even work (good thing I was unaware of this as a kid or I'd have been more annoyed).

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Modern rpgs where status effect spells are not just encouraged but damn near required really throw me for a loop since they were only effective against you and never against monsters so I only ever go full on all the damage all the time which worked great for old systems.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same. Until 15. 13 wasn't great either, but i managed to enjoy. 15 i hated. Tried again with FF7 remake and hated it. Wish they had the old ATB system. But i can imagine most don't.

I have the privilege to brag that my name appears in the end credits on FF IIX and FF IX. As quality insurance tester.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

neat!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

IIX? Do you mean 8 which would be VIII, or 12 (XII)?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8, I'm terrible at Roman numerals, 8 and 9

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8, I'm terrible at Roman numerals, 8 and 9.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's understandable they have their own confusing "logic" to them, I was half asleep when I asked & couldn't tell it if it was just a typo of 12 or not. But after looking into it for fun (like I knew that 8 is vii but not why not iix) & found this:
subordinate subtraction was rarely performed with duplicated symbols. IIX & CCD are both syntactically correct, but would more properly be represented by VIII & CCC respectively.
Like chemical formulas, there are less common, but still readable ways.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm replaying that now, sort of. Look into Final Fantasy Renaissance, a fan project adding a bunch of extra classes, right now my party is dark knight, runic knight, blue mage and time mage.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nice

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Runic Knight? I'm not sure that one was in there when I played it. Did they add a new class in an update? I might have to play again

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, very recent, last week or something? That + ranger got added, and both are a lot of fun.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Whelp I guess it's time for another playthrough

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is... That the original box art?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not sure honestly

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's uh, very early nes. That's for sure.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nope, that's the Nintendo Power poster. The box art had no characters on it.

And this is the original Famicom version.

84 page manual, man those were the days. Sit and read that booklet on the way home from the store.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same here, although it was rough. We had to drive over some mountains to reach the mall, so the drive back was during sunset. By the time I was halfway through the manual, I could only read in short bursts as we passed under highway lights.
