Unfortunately many mathematicians don't know practical applications. My calc physics professor was not great at calc. My calc professor didn't know practical applications. We formed a study group just to bridge the two. It was one of the most fascinating things I did in college.
"In the market" being the key words there. Assuming they didn't need cash from those investments to live through the crash. And assuming their home was not the majority of their net worth, like most Americans, and becoming unemployed didn't take that from them. But, sure, if you were situated well enough to ride out the financial crises, then eventually you were fine.
The debts paid back. All of which did not help the people that lost their jobs, their homes and their savings.
Let's not forget the magic of compound interest. It's not like the daddy bankers didn't load that debt onto us. And continue to charge us interest on it.
People that worked for or owned stock in Lehman Brothers might disagree about "fully recovered". To say nothing of the taxpayers that lost their homes and are still paying for the bailout.
