An excellent location for a solar panel! Also, put solar panel roofs on parking lots in those areas where there is a ton of sunshine (California, Nevada, Arizona, etc.). There are so many unobtrusive places to put solar panels that would do more than just make electricity. Shade is such a useful thing for so many things

Yes and no. The point of helicopters is that they can get into places at lower altitudes where other aircraft can't. So, in that sense, they were doing what the helicopter is built for. However, to be safe, staying at a higher altitude would be better, but then they are defeating the purpose of the machine. There are also flight altitudes that need to be obeyed in case of being in the flight path of LAX and other airports. Up to the NTSB to sort out.
It also really helps to have good forward flight for autorotation, which it didn't appear that the helicopter in the video had. Listening closely, you can hear the engine shutting down with the alarms probably telling the pilot that there isn't any oil pressure, and I am sure that the pilot's skills kicked in and they tried to autorotate instantly, but their altitude and lack of forward speed would have impaired his ability to get rotor speed up.
Autorotation requires altitude to get enough forward speed to get the rotors spinning fast enough to give some lift. Then, as the helicopter nears the ground, the pilot pulls up hard on the collective and forces the rotor to take the gained rotational energy and convert it into extra lift to soften the landing. I saw a photo of the crash site and they hit a sea can as they hit the ground. The the lack of autorotation and the landing spot compromised, they didn't have much of a chance
It's questionable at best.
Aircraft mechanic here: There is no such thing as "suggested maintenance". There are hard limits on everything and while maintenance can be deferred, the deferral is normally pretty short for most important items and nonexistent for critical items. Helicopter parts are subjected to a lot of vibration and can spontaneously fail. If flying at altitude the pilot could have auto-rotated down but they were too low for that. It's always sad to see people die like this.
My brother and I were driving through Switzerland when we noticed a cool waterfall. So we left the motorway and headed to look at it, and discovered that we were driving across a runway. Turns out, that we were driving on a hidden Swiss airforce base, which is probably the one in the clip above.
