you have alot of people in your life that you could tell you wanted to spend 5 years interacting with in the first 10-20 minutes? Find out later that they're a pain to deal with day-to-day? If you let 2 or 3 other people do a vibe check, people who'd also be stuck with your decision, what do you think the success rate would be then?

oh it's totally exhausing, I get it. It's exhausting from my side of things too, especially 'cause I'm usually screening ~8, and then going full suite of interviews with 2-3. But, don't leave people hanging... I would want to know quick if I should move on to what's next, I try my best to do the same for anyone I make contact with. No, I don't contact all 350 applicants, that IS HR's job, but if we talk, I'll let you know as soon as I know if you're not moving forward... or if you are.

I agree with this. For highly technical positions, I think this is reasonable, I do the same.

market's tight in IT right now. There are way more candidates than positions available.

5 years ago, I'd get 10 applicants in two weeks. Now I have 350 in one week and have to take down the post so I can actually review them all... and I do review them all, I think the HR filters and AI analysis is garbage. Two of my last three external hires were filtered out by the tooling and they're both terrific.

Good luck out there. Find a way to make direct contact with hiring managers, skip HR.

highly technical roles requiring the ability to self direct work, be primary on specific technical things, problem solve, collaborate with multiple people inside and outside the team, work in highly controlled, sensitive data environments.

I agree that entry level positions don't need that kind of scrutiny and there are alot of industries where you don't need that much.

I guess the point of my post was to encourage more measured views/thoughs. Some jobs, it's reasonable if done right.

Multiple interviews don't need to be burdensome. Keep it tight, get the candidate a decision quick.

hiring manager here... I disagree. I think multiple perspectives are extremely valuable and there's nothing more important in my role than hiring well. That means someone that's a fit for the work and a fit for the team. 5 interviews, 30 min each with a broad variety of people, with different interests and focuses in their questioning, is, in my opinion, very reasonable. It's 1:1, all remote, and it's usually just over the course of 2-3 days, depending on the applicant's schedule.

AI is great at log analytics. The risk here isn't using AI, the risk is that in 10 years, a human doesn't understand the log output and relies only on the AI to analyze it.

The further humans drift from the understanding of how things work, the greater chance of a technological dark age.

yea, I built my first from scratch and had 2 or 3 that needed tinkering... it was super good to understand how they work, very valuable... but at a point, I just want prints that'll pop out clean without alotta work.

If you don't want to tinker on the device itself... Bambu. It just works.

which for private residences is done fairly infrequently and rarely matches reality... and I personally have no clue how it's handled for large commercial buildings or farm acreage.

My home is worth double what the it's assessed at... and it'll likely not be adjusted unless I re-fi or sell/buy. Maybe there is much more frequent adjustment/review on commercial, industrial and agri land... but, I don't think it's super straight forward. Assesed value's an easy start tho.

You'd owe taxes on it when you sold those stocks. He's not wrong. This is one of the complications of attempting to implement a wealth tax. Is it a tax on existing holdings? The gain of those holdings? Stocks are easy, but how do you value land holdings, what about leveraged debt on land or stock?

This is not commentary on if a wealth tax is good/right/wrong/neutral, just an explaination about the complexities of implementation. Saying "we're taxing 4% of your next worth" is very hard.
