If I remember right it was an agreement following the end of the continuation war. NATO didn’t exist at the time, but the Soviets insisted that if Finland didn’t want to be invaded they’d remain neutral and the Fins accepted. It’s a similar region Austria isn’t in NATO though that was an agree between the west and Russia

It’s interesting to think about, I know the Southern colonies were mostly loyalist until the British promised freedom for slaves that would fight for them. I don’t really see a scenario that the country would have formed with the abolition of slavery, might have had two countries if the south joined the revolution but they wouldn’t have lasted. I need to read up more on the revolution period again, it’s been too long, besides, might be relevant.

A lot of the problems that the nation had to deal with later could have been solved if some of the founders made the tough decisions. I understand that situation in which the country formed was not great, but more time could have been spent dealing with the problems that they knew would be problems later.
I’m fairly certain that Thomas Jefferson, and some other founding fathers were against the continuation of slavery noting the obvious hypocrisy in “all men created equal” yet slavery continuing to exist within the new nation. I also believe one of the initial drafts had the abolition of slavery in it as well. Unfortunately, they needed to get the states with slavery based economies to sign, so it was scraped to get some of the colonies on board. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

Yeah my cyber security course was like that. He could barely write English and he was attempting to teach us ciphers. I understand that English is an extraordinarily difficult language to learn, and I don’t fault him for it, but it made that class unbearable. It is invalid to say that any one nation won the Second World War alone. It could not have been accomplished without great sacrifice in men and material from all of the allied powers. Assigning such an accomplishment to any one nation is a gross disservice to sacrifices of the rest.
Ah yes, the Soviets “saving” Eastern Europe with immense violence and repression. Did the Soviets assist in freeing the world from Nazi tyranny and occupation, yes. Did they replace it with their own brand of tyranny, also yes. The USSR also couldn’t have done it without the Lend Lease program, which Stalin himself admitted. The US also assisted in ending the battle of the Atlantic, helped free North Africa and Italy, and with the rest of the allies. tied down large amounts of German forces.

Sure there are awful people in the world, and things are rough right now in a lot of ways, but it’s worth continuing on and trying, and hoping that things work out. All giving up does is remove the chance of success. We can always improve ourselves, and that’s what matters, because even if the reason you improved yourself and still fail your still improved. I know it’s sappy, but my point stands.
I guess no one really wants to be the one that takes the risk of just asking, that possibility of social embarrassment is a terrifying thing for people. It still would be best for everyone if they just asked. I will say as a man I am very timid of asking due to the risks nowadays. All it takes a little misinterpretation to cause all sorts of problems, and that added on to the fear of social embarrassment and such is very nervewracking.

It’s really all a mixed bag to be honest. From my understanding opinions are out on most of those but it’s safe to say they yeah the peoples mixed. What really matters is what people interpret their cultural heritage as, because whether they’re right or wrong matters little when it can be politically exploited. I’m not really here to talk politic, nor bring it into the conversation, so I’ll leave that at that. Fun to read about the cultures and everything though. Plenty of good podcasts too.
Depends on who you ask really. As much as it would annoy the French, I’m fairly certain the Franks were a Germanic tribe that crossed the Rhine before Rome made them a border kingdom. The Gauls the Roman’s absolutely slaughtered because during Caesar’s Gaulic campaigns the Gauls had baggage trains with women and children that the Roman’s were found of destroying. Course some Gauls did survive but their culture was basically erased by the Roman’s when Gaul was brought in as a province.
I’ve always heard that Macedon conquered the traditional “Greek” city states, save for Sparta if I remember correctly. Athens basically viewed the Macedonians as barbarians who mimicked Greek culture but weren’t Greek. Of course that eventually changed somewhere between the fall of Alexander’s empire and fall of the Byzantines in the late 1400s. The you have all that mess with the Ottomans and their collapse which then lead to conflict between Bulgaria and Greece over Macedonia. At least I think

Hm, design of the Georgian flag does originate from Jerusalem and King David the IV, though I will cede that that guy doesn’t seem the type to know or care about such things. If anything there are implications that he might stop using it if he knew the roots of the design. Also, if I remember correctly most the stabs were superficial, meaning that most of those that committed to stabbing him didn’t really commit. Only a few of the assassin actually went for the kill. I bet they all felt real stupid when they walked out and declared him assassinated to a shocked and appalled Roman populace. Backfired on them immediately.
