#2 As funny as the memery surrounding that incident continues to be, can the asshole behind the scam please face some consequences? I feel terrible for the unwitting actors he tossed into that clusterfuck, and, of course, for the families and children who were duped.
Rivenhelper
#47 I get that reference. Also, wow I haven't thought about that in ages.
SnailsAgainstTungstenSpheres
I do not. What?
Rivenhelper
Okay so. A speed runner was playing mario, and (this is all theory but the best explanation) randomly the character on the screen suddenly moved in a way that should be impossible. After a ton of research trying to recreate the glitch, it was kind of settled on the following explanation. A single electron from a solar flare just so happened to perfectly hit the cartridge of his game in such a perfect way that it flipped a 1 to a 0 in the area that handled where on the screen the character was.
SnailsAgainstTungstenSpheres

I know, right? I can't think of any other accidental speedrun time-saver that hasn't been solved, not for this long. There's always a community, or at least one true believer, who manages to crack the code. Just not for this one thing.

Brother that is the flag of Georgia 🇬🇪. One of the countries that was invaded by Russia in 2008. I’d assume it’s a joke about evading Russian infrared.
anarchoFeline
that is not the same flag and this guy is definitely a right wing weirdo looking through his time line
anarchoFeline
it is the flag/symbol of the order of the holy sepulchre not Georgia
SmallWoodLandCreature
Hm, design of the Georgian flag does originate from Jerusalem and King David the IV, though I will cede that that guy doesn’t seem the type to know or care about such things. If anything there are implications that he might stop using it if he knew the roots of the design. Considering your other comment (pic of his twitter) it does seem that your original assumption is more likely to be correct. Thanks for being cool about it.

Nein, zweiundvierzig reimt sich nicht auf blau, doch englische.
ImAWeirdMom
Sorry if that's bad, I'd put my German language education as toddler, at best.

"aber auf Englisch" instead of "doch englische" and you're golden.

I also felt this was an important fact to bring to light.

Ok, but "42" does rhyme with blue.

Fourtytwo does, fallshermjagergewehr zweiundvierzig however, does not. And I'm more inclined to read the whole name in German. ( I'm not even German myself) but that's just me. Apart from that, good meme

How is panera juice the missing ingredient to Four loko? The real recipe is 5 hour energy and Steel Reserve
applesforjuice
Two people died drinking that lemonade
Aeonika
The caffeinated lemonade caused a few heart attacks not too long ago.
splatking
how caffeinated /was/ it??
Aeonika
No more than coffee if I recall right, but a large is like drinking around 4 of them which probably caused the issue for sensitive people.
Ryyyyyyyan
Fun fact! That Panera Lemonade has about twice as much caffeine as a 5 hour energy.

you're close - cant dilute that Steel Reserve, crush a couple No-Doz in there and you've got it

#24 the steam engine has been around since antiquity. They often were used to make temple doors to open on their own.
SlyeFox
There's also a MAJOR difference between low-pressure steam & high-pressure steam.
evilspock
Is why when you read about the invention of the steam engine, you see references to the "practical" steam engine, ie. One that does significant, useful amounts of work.
Bestiarium
In medieval France/Germany, they were used to power expensive children's toys
corvusvalerius9000
"often"
Pretty sure we have zero archaeological evidence for this. Best we have are written accounts - Vitruvius and Hero of Alexandria. Undoubtedly basic steam powered toys had been created. But there's no evidence, textual or physical, for widespread functional use.

evilspock
This. It appears to be a situation like gunpowder in ancient china - they invented it, but the potential wasn't really realized and the tech was considered a toy.
IAmTheBadW01f
I remember hearing about an ancient toy with wheels in a mountainous region of South America... It didn't make sense to use wheels to get around such severe terrain, but it was fun to play with

Ancient temple mechanics are fascinating. Like coin operated machines. It makes sense, many people were very intelligent in that particular area.
But with the education I was given, it feels so out of place.
I love educating myself further, finding this stuff out.
SherMattLockSmith
Yes it was coin operated, but calling it a machine is a little grandiose. It dropped the coin on a lever that let out holy water until the coin slid off, there was literally only one moving part.

Is this graphic suggesting that stairs are an Inclined plane or that the rope/pulley thing is an Inclined plane? Stairs definitely are several separate planes which are not Inclined. Or I'm wrong. I'm not an engineer.
ashetar
It’s a worksheet, you are supposed to circle the one that matches, the other one in the row does not match the type of simple machine
KingXizor
The stairs are the inclined plane. It's still just a ramp in effect but with steps for traction at that degree of incline.
BrdCdn
So every hillside is a machine?
quzar
If the hillside was constructed to perform the function of an inclined plane, then yes.

Foxes, wolves, some kinds of snakes can see infrared. Also, having stuff that doesn't reflect infrared as much can help keep mosquitos away.

Going by the flag, it's Georgian, the country, not the state. Take a guess what which has infrared they'd be out hunting...

#11 What's so special about making a PowerPoint titled "Overcoming Nervousness"?
IncognitoPanda
I am still wondering that
MurderousCoat
I guess because you generally have to give a presentation when you make a powerpoint? I'm honestly not too sure myself.
BrockEffingSamson
I guess the joke is that they have two different stimulants on their desk, which would make them nervous.
Granadadaggl
Also three warning/info banners apparently being ignored, those make me nervous. How can you even get three of those?
Hendlton
Also what the hell is it with Zyn? I didn't even hear about it until like a week ago and now it's everywhere. How fast is this spreading?
BuzzedHoneyBee
Seeing two memes about it made me question if it was a product placement in my memes now too lol
Hendlton
I don't know. I just find it weird that suddenly so many people are talking about it like it's a usual thing, even though it's a nicotine product. That doesn't tend to happen. Even vaping took years to ramp up. This kind of just happened over night.
BuzzedHoneyBee
I hadn't heard about it until now so I presume it's a product placement with how "viral" it seems to be.
Hendlton
Kind of hoping it is product placement rather than a new trend.
DoctorSniffles
Wait what is Zyn?
Hendlton
It's basically pure nicotine powder in a little baggie that you put in your mouth. I guess it's healthier than some alternatives, but it's gaining popularity like crazy. I kind of doubt all of these people were chewing tobacco before using it. Maybe they vaped? No clue, but it seems to be becoming "cool".

Animorphs
Tobacco free nicotine pouches. So, unlike dipping/chewing tobacco, you can swallow your spit while you have one in. So it is discreet. Or it can be used to help quit chewing/dipping tobacco.
LoligoTX
It definitely helped me quit smoking. It comes in different nicotine levels. I started high and gradually tapered down to the lowest nicotine content, then threw it away. Been nicotine free for three years now (this time, I'd gone 5 years at one point, started again when my fiance dumped me).
Animorphs
Congratulations! I’ve quit lots of drugs but one where you can just go to the gas station and get it easily would be far harder than ones obtained through illegal means and/or pharmaceutical ones.

#20 wait, am I hearing a preference for quark over Guinan?! Next you’ll tell me how great Wesley crusher is! Ridiculous!
Fastjack2056
There was an episode where the whole crew is mind-controlled, Wesley is the last one free, and he's running through the Enterprise like he already knows every secret route & has site-to-site transporter macros ready. That's when I knew this kid spent his spare time gaming zombie apocalypse scenarios on the Starship Enterprise in the holodeck. That's when I decided Wesley and I could be friends.
DigiT00l
There aren't really any good Guinan episodes, there are good episodes she is in, but there aren't good episodes about her
DaveSauce48
Mark Twain has entered the chat
DigiT00l
Is that a Guinan episode? I count it as a Data episode
DaveSauce48
If anything could be called a Guinan episode, it's that one IMO.
JugOfVoodoo
It's the closest thing we have to a Guinan episode, since it explains her connection to Picard.
SlyMrFox
Right? She was a better therapist than the empath.
DigiT00l
That's partly because Whoopi couldn't be in all episodes so they didn't write much for her, only a few episodes (that did result in her indirectly screwing Will Wheaton out of promising career options outside Star Trek and a reason he quit the show), so whenever she bothered to randomly show up on set, she had no lines written for her, so they stole Marina's lines
DigiT00l

DigiT00l
Though, there was one episode where they clearly hoped Whoopi would show up, and wrote a Troi scene with Whoopi potentially showing up in mind
The episode where some alien inserts himself into the Enterprise crew, it opens with Troi and Data doing a bet thing where Troi is clearly written as if she was a bartender
SlyMrFox
Wait, how did her involvement mess with Will's career?
DigiT00l
One of the season openers was written with Whoopi in mind, but she wasn't available on the planned shooting date, so they ended up filming episode 2 first
Will Wheaton was required for the opening episode but not episode 2 as he had a movie role lined up, but due to the delays of filming episode 1, he couldn't film the movie as it now coimcided with each other
Something like that
SlyMrFox
Dang.
