If the bank fails to sell your home for open market prices, that should, by law, cover for all the debt expenses.
In all other western ccountries, failing to pay credit does not mean that you immediately lose your home for example. It is a process of multiple years and priority is always not to lose it. It is controlled how banks can collect debt from people who fails to pay. The Bank have to apply court order for selling the home on public market with regular prices, not price gouging allowed. after few years, the debt gets canceled anyway if your status stays for example unemployed certain period of time.
