In many places, mortgages are cheaper than rent. And with owning a home, you have a piece of equity you can later sell, or stop paying "rent." Yes, homes need upkeep and have taxes, but in 99% of situations, the value of a home increases, so you're still ahead of the game. Ex: my mortgage is 2100; rent in my neighborhood is 3000.
