They might be a little deeper than the 80s macho man shoot-em-ups that we largely grew up with, but they're still pretty surface level and spoonfeed a lot to the audience. The fact that there's multiple references, Easter eggs, or crossover plotlines doesn't really add rich complexity in my eyes, just makes them unnecessarily convoluted
