If you want to be extra mad, look up the unfortunately named Operation Wetback. TL;DR we imported Mexican workers for farm labor during WWII, and then rounded them up, stuff them in crates, and shipped them home.

The problem isn't the religion, its the organization of the pantry. Most churches might have a pantry but its reliant on donations and so they can only give out what they get. Other churches do a much better job of inventory management and ask for money donations in lieu of food. That way they can provide meal kits, etc.
