When LA bought the private water company in 1902, there were zero blueprints. The entire map of underground pipes existed in only one place: William Mulholland’s head.

He started as a ditch digger in 1878 and memorized the system over decades. LA had to hire him to run the water department because nobody else knew where the pipes were. He documented the later aqueduct, but the early grid lived entirely in his brain.
