I've been playing MMO's since around 2010, and have almost exclusively played as a female character as well. The animations are better, the voices are better, it's just a better experience. I once tried a game and the mage class was gender-locked to male, and I was like, "What the fuck is this bullshit?", and quit.
Pretty sure Imgur is mostly Gen X and Millennials, so yes, we are old enough to get this.
