Mmmmyep, GM has always transparently been an asshole company. I'm glad we're talking about it, but don't act like this is in any way a change of course from its founding in 1908.
I've always been a Toyota guy, but learning just how shitty they are has me looking at Honda. They're all huge corpos, I don't expect any of them to be moral, but the sheer amount of money they've donated to the right is gross.
It was rather disgusting to see the Toyota ceo don a red-maga-hat last year. The camry is made in Kentucky, so that's another reason for me to hate toyota. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they're all maga.
You couldn’t pay me to take an American made automobile. I used to work in the automobile industry and GM/Chevrolet/Buick specifically. I’ll pay the tariffs and get a vehicle I can trust.
Very disappointing. Ive been a die hard GM guy my whole life. I worked for them, and with the exception of a Kia I had for 3 years, I have exclusively driven GM cars/trucks. The new vehicles they're making are absolute garbage, and they've hitched to the trump train. I hope they go bankrupt.
I wont likely ever buy a gas vehicle again, and it seems like the North American manufacturers are pulling out of EV Production in an attempt to win Trump-Points.
This is a game about protectionism. Trump scored big with Midwestern voters when in 2016 Ford anounced they were moving a plant to Mexico, Hillary said nothing, and Trump said "if I was president..." Hillary didn't campaign in the Rust belt. I remember distinctly before the election hearing what he said and thinking "uh oh!" But still everyone thought Hillery would clean up vs Trump. None of his "if I was President.." statements ever meant much in reality but a swing state is a swing state
But he talks LOUD and SIMPLE and makes BIG PROMISES and always finds someone else to scapegoat when he doesn't deliver. And the stupid fucks buy it every time.
I would never buy an America brand automobile...Iown a Subaru, have for years...American cars are crap, they are ugly and clunky to drive and the companies are nasty Rethuglican supports...NO!
Doesn't make much difference when the people who work for the corporation are deluded into thinking the billionaire con man is helping them. Those employees gave a standing ovation to the guy screwing them over.
And gm never paid back the all of the bailout $$$ money they groveled from the federal govt. And don't try to tell me they paid it off; the taxpayer lost $11-B when it was all said and done.
As much as branding efforts try to pretend otherwise a company doesn't care about anything because they're not people. They have no opinions or values. Publicly traded companies are just machines for maximizing shareholder value.
That time they knew about faulty ignition switches that were getting people killed and decided not to do anything about it for over 10 years kinda soured me on the brand.
I remember reading that it was absolutely normal to go back to the dealership after buying a brand new American car in the 50s-70s(?) because something would need fixing. That's why Japanese car makers became popular... The cars were built correctly from the get go.
I don't get why anyone buys ANY American car brand. They are all fucking shit. Whether it is Ford, GMC, or Chevy, they can't make a decent car to save their lives. JDM or KDM all the way.
I gave up GM after the government bailed them out in 2008/09, and they used most of their initial funds to pay exec bonuses, and then turned around and asked for more money. Ford bailed themselves out. CDJR paid their loan back in large part by selling off RAM. I will not by a GM product ever again.
He fucked them over with tariffs, but they still remain loyal because they don't want to be ruined by affordable Chinese electric vehicles being allowed into the country.
Trump didn't screw over the corporations with tariffs, he screwed us with them. The same exact argument people give against raising minimum wage, "prices will go up to cover the expense," is the same exact thing that happens with tariffs.
Well if there's one thing right and left do agree on it's "fuck China" so they can open up Chinese car dealerships all they want. Millions ain't buying.
I hope the day not only allows the smaller safer cars into the states but also close the loopholes that let large oversized vehicles skirt emissions regulations. Really stomp on their balls.
It will take time, but yeah. If the Chinese are allowed to operate openly in the US, the American car market will be quickly dominated by them. US automakers won't be the only casualties. The Korean automakers will be put out as well (their track record for building cheap garbage is even worse than the Americans)
I mean, I wouldn't buy those vehicles anyway. I only hear how great they are, but I have yet to see any crash test and they haven't been around long enough to see their reliability. They are also backed by the Chinese government more so than GM. I wouldn't buy GM either, but that's for different reason.
The difference is dems provided incentives for US automakers to build their own EVs. Trump threw out all of that immediately and they immediately stopped working on them.
Exactly. And the ban is specifically on the software, not the car itself. Which in my view as a software engineer is 100000% valid. It is not racist to acknowledge the state level hooks China has in everything. You have to assume the software is malicious if it can't be studied and controlled which at that scale is just not feasible.
which is why I basically unsubscribe any YT channel that does an OperaGX sponsorship. Opera *was* a great browser when it came out - 20-25 years ago when you could get it for free and got ads, or you could buy it (changing you from "product" to "customer") and get no ads. The slide was from 2005-2016. 2005 was "no more ads, we get paid by Google for making Google our default search engine" 2016 was "we were bought by a Chinese Company..."
These companies pass on the tariffs to their customers, so they lose nothing. Trump has fucked all US citizens every time they buy something, but major companies are fine, that's why they still support him
And it seems that they are all collectively under the illusion that he will reward this loyalty. They'll get fucked over by Donny Dementia just like every other person or organization who has cozied up to him. Remember, 'Everything Trump touches turns to 💩."
omg car companies not having american peoples interests in mind, i'm shocked okay, not shocked, not even surprised
because i remember how they fucked the railways to make a more money themselves xD the US is car centric to its detriment because of GM and others backing the bastards
Rich oligarchs LOVE fascism. Same as it always was. Mussolini even said, fascism could just as easily be called "corporatism" because it's when big business takes over the government.
The US used to build somewhat dense cities with tons of trams too. It was all bulldozed for the car, legislation made it borderline illegal to build with any density or mixed use zoning, and as a result the US nowadays is largely car dependent.
Im talking about a shared parking lot departing work, getting in a car and driving to the QSR across the lot. That’s lazy. But the space between things in the Midwest requires a vehicle. And lastly the rails to trails program increased cycling so the dismantling of unused tracks was a benefit. That said I’m all about public trains, they just need to be maintained
Correct, 50 years ago the town I live in had a dedicated train station with switch tracks and freight infrastructure that serviced transit to the capital and the biggest cities in the state
The tracks are still here - running through the town - like a scar that never healed
The highways came at either end of the town, new council was 'elected' to shut the railway down, poorer residents that relied on the railway to get to work moved on and now the town is, basically, one long truckstop...
also most of their parts cross the boarder several time, back and forth. i thinknit was honda or hyundai that tried to appease him then got accidentally fucked over and he didnt care. when we can, we should boycott or speak out against them. make it hurt to side with him.
Think a lot of western auto makers have also realised by now they cant compete with chinese brands in the EV market, if they tried to sell EV's at those prices the brands would just drop dead left and right.
Market's gonna crack sooner or later. The longer it gets put off, the farther behind they're going to be. Nobody is happy about paying 30k more to downgrade from pushbuttons to a touchscreen.
I love my Hyundai for this reason. Fuck having to use an iPad just to change my ac. Give me actual buttons and knobs. I can control AC, change volume and skip songs etc without even looking because I know the feel of everything.
Aranon1183
Another GM higher-up visited that retard in the Oval Office to make sure legislation is passed to make it illegal to work on your own vehicles.

I'm boycotting GM mostly due to them making shitty vehicles.

That. plus the added disincentive related to the 2009 bailout. The taxpayer ended up losing $11-Billion on that deal for GM.

Guantanamobaae
I’ve never been a GM fan and now that they have bent over for fascism, I’ll never consider GM junk. Ever.
