Exactly! The movie was pointing out that Mattel made Barbie as the stereotypical doll and Ken as an accessory to her. This had some bad consequences both for Barbie and Ken. In fact there was a song called "Just Ken," where Ken laments his plight. The movie highlighted both characters' struggles and how supremacy is wrong both in the Real World and Barbieland.

We're not "working" on that at all. There have been complete, complex female characters in movies for as long as there have been movies. There have also been one-dimensional characters of both genders for just as long. The problem is that writers/directors these days stop at "she's a woman" and feel that's all that's needed for them to be a "strong character," and don't bother to actually develop them in any way.

Yeah except when it highlights a real disparity in the social-political power structure that people who grew up with Barbie live in, and in fact is the exact structure that caused the inception of Barbie in the first place. Yeah, what we have here is the discourse on whether we should "take seriously"/even outright forbid certain types of besmirching activities. If one side has had to tolerate it for years, they might rightfully so say that its bad in all its forms, and do what Candace here did. And on the other side people might want to keep their free speech and make fun of "everyone equally". I'm somewhat on the fence about this conversation, but when some people get a clear disadvantage, then we should step in.

But is it wrong?. Satire and parodies do exist. No one expects a Barbie movie to be a true reflection of reality. This Candence lady is just doing the classic right wing BS victimism.

If this wasn't a movie specifically made to parody patriarchal stereotypes the argument would hold a lot more water. That being said, there is an argument to be made whether the effect would be more poignant if there were less strawman-y representations as well. However, honestly, it's just a fun, occasionally pretty witty advert for Barbie, and should be treated as such. An on-the-nose comedic commercial that can be enjoyable but isn't supposed to be too deep.

I definitely felt this way about the last Charlies Angels movie, it was annoying as all get out, so many lost opportunities, all the men in it are either evil, stupid, or push overs, except the one mentor figure whose killed in the first 15 minutes. About a missed opportunities, the 'muscle' of the group was a stick thin super model, same body type as the others, could of had a more solid body type, think Luisa from Encanto or that depiction of wonder woman.
