This would be amazing. I just went through several YEARS of attempting to cancel a home security service. Every time I'd call, they would first upsell me, then transfer me to other departments, two guys just straight up fucking hung up on me. It took me screaming and swearing on the phone after being on hold for over two hours before they'd finally get a manager on the phone...who then also tried to upsell me.

If they do business in NYC then they have to follow NYC rules. Same with the EU and UK where they have laws on cookie notification, data use, age verification etc. US companies have to obey those rules or stop doing business in those countries. That's why Imgur has geoblocked themselves from the UK and we need a VPN to use the site.

Same in the UK. That email thing IIRC came from EU law that the UK kept, but Click To Cancel is law that the Tories passed in 2024, long after we left the EU. It says cancelling has to be as easy as signing up, if you signed up online you must be able to cancel online. Renewals have to have a reminder sent out a month before giving you the option to cancel and so on.

Even the guy who sort of pioneered modern capitalism - Adam Smith - is very open in his book that governments will need to regulate markets to ensure they remain free and open. They can by prosecuting them, issuing arrest warrants for repeated violations (which other U.S. jurisdictions have to honor - to not honor an arrest warrant would immediately trash the credibility of any law enforcement agency, and destroy interstate relationships), among other things that can be done.
