I've seen this done properly in person. A gentle quick spritz of ether and toss in a lit match. These guys were doing it alllllll wrong.

OK, story time. Had a friend with our national bus transport company. Naturally, they are maintaining statistics of worker injuries and deaths of their personnel, after all professional driving can be risky. All their deaths in service and heavy injuries in the recent years were tied to some sort of tire manipulation during maintenance. If these two idiots survived, they are extremely lucky.

Exactly, in my company we have large stakers (like the ones in seaports); the procedure requires us to place the tyre in a cage when we inflate it. Years ago, two people failed to do so, the tyre exploded, and one of them died.

Mythbusters tried this with a less explosive result - the tire *will* inflate but it rapidly contracts after and heavily damages the lining of the tire

The point isnt to *inflate* the tire, its to get the bead seated on the rim so the tire holds air when you do go to inflate the tire

Also even IF you have a good idea about the correct amount of ether, those look like split rims and you should never do this with with split rims. They tend to come apart and do horrible horrible things to bystanders.

I mean this general idea is very commonly used for mounting large tires. These guys have probably done this before with success, but they didn't know to call the attempt off after it took too long.

We used to use a strap to force the bead towards the rim by tightening around the center of the tire tread. Used to do a lot of low rider tires on wide rims with narrow tires.

Brother friend & bosses son went doing this at home.
Result rim to skull, 2 severed optic nerves, burst eyeballs and reconstructed skull.
Still alive, makes wiring looms for vintage cars on custom frame by touch.

My grandpa told a story of watching someone die to a split rim flying off. Which is why he said use a cage or a chain when mounting split rims.
I bypassed his advice by simply refusing to work on split rims.

It's supposed to be an emergency field fix for when the tire becomes unseated from the bead on the rim. You also need air to immediately fill it up or it'll just come off again. But every idiot sees it on the internet and thinks it'll look cool for their friends till they fuck up and it shatters some bones.
