Without these subtitles I'd have to watch this sub-par entertainment clip for 10 or more times until I heard the joke completely and not laugh. With the subtitles I only have to hear it once to not laugh. So I vote subtitles

Okay I am struggling with finding the problem here. They are not an ugly font. The text has a black outline to be perfectly readable. And they keep pace with the speech almost perfectly. Almost certainly done by hand by a real person... What is bad here?

For one, humans read most efficiently by entire words or even phrases, not letters.

When kids learn to read an alphabetic writic system, they start by deciphering words letter by letter. The next step is recognizing entire words as a unit. Finally, as they become fluent readers, they read entire short sentences at a single glance. It's why yuo cna raed tihs. When the subtitle letters are slowly dripping in, it interferes with this natural fluent reading. Whereas complete sentences allow you to quickly glance back and forth between the subtitles and the rest of the screen.

Avid readers and people who watch a lot of subtitled foreign movies can speed-read 2 sentences within a fraction of a second and then look up again to actually watch the film. No production company ever said "You know what, we need flashier subtitles in fancy typefaces and colors smack in the middle of the screen, with individual letters popping in as the actors pronounce them." This obnoxious nonsense started with social media. It reminds of amateurish "graphic design" in MS Word or Corel Draw.

And the fact that so few people object to this BS is further confirmation that the overall reading ability is going to shit. Statistics also suggest that high-school level reading scores are tanking, and not just in the US. Experts are blaming digital media. Everything is consumed in video or podcast form because text on a brightly lit screen isn't very eye-friendly, especially on a small smartphone screen. Call me old and cranky, but I dread living in a world where people don't read anymore.

I disagree with "needlessly" here - as the other commenter mentioned it's about comedic timing. Subtitles give away punchlines when they're put up ahead of the audio, which is why I usually turn them off for comedies.

I have seen the reverse complained about though to similar acclaim that putting it all in one black, especially for comedy, often spoils the punchline. This is a matter of not being able to please all of the people all of the time. Someone is going to be upset no matter what you do. I would argue the best improvement here would be to have the text scroll up and fade out as it goes instead of just vanishing as the next line starts.

Probably slow readers while playing the video on mute cause having videos auto unmuted is an earrape minefield.
I am a fast reader and I still despise the fact that the sentence is removed the millisecond the last letter is shown. Let alone if you’re only halfway through the sentence.
